I saw a post that SRmotorsports is coming out with an intake that fits the Greddy turbo. Site here. bottom of page. But it's $500.
I like the idea of having an enclosure to keep the engine heat out, ie. racing beat REVi, SR motorsports.
So, I decided to cut up my stock intake box and fit it around my current Greddy intake. I had to trim alot of the plastic for it to fit. Put 2 latches to keep it tightly closed and allows me to remove easily. I'm almost finished, just need to close up the backend somehow for it to really keep the hot engine bay air out. I've also ordered a universal K&N filter that will replace the airnix intake.
I'll update when it comes in. My engine bay looks like stock now.

Anybody know of other intake options coming out that work with the Greddy turbo? I really dislike the airnix sponge intake that came with the kit.

 

K&N filter cost me $75, it's similiar to the pic attached, except shorter and has the mesh on the top part also.

Hey adrian I see you got the stock engine cover to fit over the MazdaSpeed strut tower brace. Whould it be a big pain to get a side pic of the cover to see how much you cut away or did you mod it another way?

 

Still runs good. I'm hoping my idle stays the same after I put in the k&n air filter yet.
That car was the US prototype for Greddy (screen name is schwarf). It's the same filter and they do not have the backend closed up, so it's just for looks, (doesn't keep hot air out).

I can get a picture tonight. I had to trim alittle off the sides and also some on the inside of the plastic cover.

Update: Crappy sponge filter is out. pics of the k&n filter installed (along with the breather filter for the hose) and also switched to the greddy RS BOV.
It's running good and the idle is still good.

what did you do with the hose that was connected to the air filter housing on the old airnx filter? I was thinking a t fitting to one of the hoses connected to the air pipe behind the maf.

Will that work?

 

Get a breather filter from K&N. They have some with male ends that fits perfectly.

 

also was thinking of just getting one of those tiny little air filters you can get from the auto parts store , should work too

 

Quick questions,
1 - whats a breather filter and is it needed when swapping out intake filters on the greddy kit?

2 - I wanted to go with the Apexi filter as it is about the same price as the K&N. Do you know which one would be needed. I'm not sure what size flange will work with the greddy kit...

Vibrant Performance offers aluminum tubing in straight, 45 deg, and 90 deg bends in the right size (should be 3.5" OD) and I would recommend the new AEM Dry-Flow oil-less filter which can also be had in 5" long and 9.5" long sizes with an internal airhorn to fit a 3.5" OD tube end. You should be able to run it out into the front bumper cover just like AEM etc. CAI's

you can order the Vibrant stuff from http://www.seffects.com/parts/vibrant_performance.asp and I just bought the AEM Dry-Flow 3.5" tube x 9.5" long filter from Summit Racing for $54 shipped, various companies sell the silicone hose joints, clamps, etc.

It's just a small filter. You'll need to attach it to the hose that is left open once you remove the greddy airnix filter. Picture of the hose attached to the airnix filter here.

 

if you go to the Vibrant link I posted above and page down, they have fiitings you can drill and fit into the intake tube without welding or any other special tools for connecting that line to, this lets you just pull off the main filter like the original rather than having a separate one

I'm getting ready to order a some of those elbows so if you want to get together and see what we can figure out for your car let me know

There's 3 hoses that were connected to the STOCK intake.
2 coming out from behind the alternator and the 1 from the oil filler neck.

Connect the hose from the oil filler neck and 1 from behind the alternator to the 2 nipples on the GREDDY suction pipe. Then connect the other hose from behind the alternator to the back of the GREDDY airnix filter.

 

I decided to make my own air box from aluminum. Its pretty tric it even has an oil quart holder and the catch can in it, it has aircraft latches that are spring loaded to make servicing the filter and getting the spare oil out easier, I will take some pics before I paint it black so it blends in with my other stuff. Right now, it makes the car look like a NASCAR car, under the hood because of the angles. I don’t like that, I’m all about making it look stock. I’m trying a riveted version for ease of putting it together, but I might end up welding it, don’t know yet I’ll see when its painted, I have my templates and jigs so can make another one fairly quick. Oh and I put a vacuum line to see if the box produces vacuum under throttle (if it does I need to make the air inlet bigger because it to restrictive) and I dint get any significant readings so the inlet is sufficient as far as I know, I’m no scientist, I just make things out of metal for fun. Later and excuse the incoherent stuff. I’m way drunk right now. Cheers!!!!!

 

Alright.. i think i know whats going on here. I have both tubes that come from behind the radiator connected to a bridge... and then that is connected to the intake piping. (as seen in attached pic).

I have nothing connected to the air filter.

What is the purpose of these two tubes? I wonder if i need to reconnect it the way you have it.

nope, your good with the T in there.
Not sure the purpose of the hoses. 1 is the for the metering oil pump and the other is for the jet air mixing hose (whatever that is?).

 

alright... now that that is settled. Time to get to refitting the intake box.

I think i'll go at it next week... when i can get my hands on a circular saw.
