Well, I joined a dubious club. I was driving my car last Friday pretty normally, and merging onto the 5 from the 134 around 5500 RPM and my car started sounding like a truck, EGT's spiked, no power, and CEL light started blinking. Got it towed to the dealer. Found out yesterday it was indeed a blown motor.
I'm bummed. Engine lasted about 20,000 miles on the turbo kit. Have to get a new motor. High probability apex seals tore through the turbo. Turning back to NA anyways.

I was only running 6.5 psi of boost, as I had a flawed wastegate spring on the Greddy turbo that only allowed me to boost to stock levels. We were getting ready to install another spring to up the boost. Won't need that anymore.

That sucks... I'm guessing you didnt have the recall done, but would it of mattered?
How many miles were on your motor before the turbo?
I still dont understand how people are ready to blow 10k on these new (untunned)turbo kits that put out wayy more CFM then it took to blow your motor, with out knowing what the cause is or how to prevent it.
Atleast as they keep blowing up one day someone might find the weak link.

Since you're paying out of pocket anyway - why not get an extra rotor while you're at it?

Under this, Mazda is checking for bad cat converters, fouled plugs, etc...in a few cases, like less than 1%, some people will have their engines replaced.
There is no difference between an '04, '05 or '06 engine.

people often forget that you get what you pay for. It's known that the greddy kit was rushed out the door with many bugs. And its not surprising that on the very early RX8s, with a very early turbo system there was going to be some big booms.
There is always a risk with Forced induction - I'm staying N/A right now till i save up a good amount of "emergency car money" and not to mention the 8K for Mazsports Kit.
But time/money/reliability/performance are all tradeoffs against each other. I'm making a general assumption but the reason Mazsport's kit is so ******* expensive is because its good high quality tested stuff, and the reason it took forever for Mazsports' to come out is beacuse it had to go thru some insane testing and realiability stuff.

The greddy would of blown the motor right away, not 20k miles later.

The only part of a turbo kit that you can blame for blowing the engine is the EMS - either it wasn't tuned correctly, or it malfunctioned. You can't blame the poor quality couplers, the turbine, the intercooler or the piping. IIRC, FanMan is running the IntX right now. Not that it was the fault of the IntX. My bet would be something similar to what I believe happened to me. He probably pinged at some point in the tuning process and cracked a seal at that time. The seal might have finally just given out. Unfortuantely, there is no way to know for sure.
One thing is for sure - if FanMan is running a good EMS with a good tune, which I believe he was, then dumping the pipes, couplers, IC and turbine is NOT going to buy him any additional reliability. Now, I have no doubt that the couplers that MazSport sells are top notch. I'm also sure that more effort was paid to sizing the turbo to match well with the Renesis. That's all well and good, and worth some extra $. But, saying that you are buying additional reliability is fooling yourself. Is my GReddy turbo setup using the IntX any more likely to blow my engine than MazSport's setup using the IntX? I think not.

Guys, stop hijacking the **** out of this thread with questions about recalls, differences in 04 and 05's and arguing about mazsport vs greddy.
/end rant (madog excluded since his post was informational)
Fanman, that sucks about your car!! What's the game plan now? Rebuild it and stay NA or are you going to go back to FI? Car still at the dealership?
