I'd do it but a) can't spare the money since I need to save for the Patriots Super Bowl in AZ and b) trying to convince the dealer my existing coils really are going out. Especially with 17k miles left under warranty.

Ah something to spend my tax return on...

For the folks who may not realize it the ignition coils have been the limiting factor in making power for the RX8 turbo kits and have been burning out on a regular basis. I have 57K miles on my '04 and am on my second set.

Also if you track your car at all you will tend to see random misfires when driving at prolonged high RPM. This is great news!!

pictures are essential for people with modified engine bays.
I'd like to know where the new coils sit in relation to the motor. I have a battery relocation on the coil side and my wiring may foul the coils if they are moved or too big. I also cant have the coils sticking out from the engine too far unless they have been lifted. all of which I can work out from a photo of the new coils on a std car without the stock air-box and pipes in place.

im pretty sure pics arent going to be allowed until after jan. 1, and even then, it might be awhile.

i know i wouldnt post pics until scott said ok. if someone saw the pics and remade the kit, for cheaper, and stole a good chunk of his business. thats intellectual theft!

Well, no. Not really. That isn't how that works.
If Scott is worried about someone reverse-engineering his kit, he can take countermeasures (like re-potting the coils and obscuring any tell-tale signs of part numbers and such).
However, if someone is able to copy the design and make it out of parts from elsewhere without copying anything that is unique about them, there is no infringement.
Plus, selling them for less would probably be a margins game considering the cost on coils, wires and connectors and the machining involved in the bracket.

i have seen the pack and it is not that much different mounting wise than the oem. What i mean is that the pack can be mounted anywhere you want them as long as the sparkplug wires reach.

Can someone explain why all the gains on the NA dyno are only in the mid range rpms? I would have suspected the gains would have been much more tilted towards the upper rpms where the stock ignition would be most stretched to its limits?

Because the problem is that the OE coils have a difficult time at max Ve.
The resistance across the gap is highest at the torque peak.

MM: Would a Ve comparison chart be a good way to post up the difference in performance between proper working OE coils vs. the Mazsport coils? I have the autoenginuity scan tool that can gather and plot Ve charts. I know people would poop all over street "dyno" curves but I was thinking there would be less controversy over Ve plots.

What say you?

Actually power increased over the majority of the rpm range and improved the peak.
After letting the vehicle sit for ten minutes to reduce heat soak from the previous runs it picked up even more to 191rwhp.

so 180 horse before the coils ... and after a cool down period and a coil swap it put down 191WHP... thats a gain of 11 horse. If this is to be common then thats one of the larger gains out of any mod short of FI.

What happend to the dyno sheet? It showed no gain in the top end only a few in the middle?

Where is the 11whp coming from?

No ignition pickup = no RPM.
I think Scott was going for illustrative purposes rather than hard numbers with this plot. Can't say I blame him since this is really meant to be a "support" mod rather than a "power" mod in and of itself.

My only desires regarding the dyno sheet is that the power scale have higher resolution and that the speed scale be RPMs instead of MPHs.
I saw that dyno sheet, I thought there were more. Was confused by the 11hp thing.

Just trying to get all the consumer facts, $600 is a lot to spend without doing some research.

all i needed to know was that this mod has more power gains than an exhaust that costs 2x as much. lol.

i'll buy an aftermarket exhaust if i go FI, when it actually makes a difference.

the dyno shows stock coils at 180 ... then it shows the Mazsport coils at 185. this is a 5whp gain. Scott said that after they let the car cool down they ran it again and it made 191. (not pictured on the dyno sheet). The difference from the 180HP stock pull and the 191hp Mazsport pull (that is not shown) is where i got the 11 HP gain from.
