n00b With a Quest For Huge Power
#26
Don't you think 600 rwhp is just a tad overkill for an '8? Hell, I wouldn't want to go over 400 even if I had the opportunity to. Like others, I wouldn't mind a solid 300rwhp, but I can easily settle for virtually stock and enjoy it for what it is.

High peak horsepower cars are fast. But with a dyno graph that looks like a pyramid. Top speed is fun, but how often are you really going to do that?
Quick cars are fun to drive. Cars that respond with the grunt you want when you want it.

There's a good size group who are making 500-600whp in FD's, so the motors will do it just fine. Reliable? Not a chance. I'm pretty used to unreliable motors, so I don't think it's an issue for me.
I go to Lime Rock often, so power matters quite a lot to me. When I'm not rolling around in this car, I plan to do time attack with it.
As for the 20B - GL finding one, and more-so, GL finding parts for it. FD motors are easy to get and there's plenty of parts out there for them.
p.s.
I don't get the Knight Rider joke...

The 8 is a well balanced car which is very rewarding when driven properly, agreed it can use more power and good power to match the platform has been achieved.
Another flaw in your plan is if you want to build a proper time attack car with 600rwhp out of any car your going to have to drop real serious coin, 30k not being much, on every single aspect of the car, seem welding, proper cage, fully adjustable suspension to get a proper track alignment. Yes you can just put big HP and go but someone with the proper setup and much less power will be faster. Also you need very elite driving skills to properly time attack a big turbo car and keep that sucker spooled.
Volvo's are easy to get big HP numbers in the 400's and even 500 mark as they do have strong bottom ends, but your not talking the same language, think of the power band of those engines, spooled at 3k shift a 5k...6K if your pushing it? also theirs a reason Volvo's are called Turbo bricks.
People on this site get offended by new people talking huge power and tones of smack as many of them have invested time and money into developing what is available and comments like you are stating, although I'm sure it wasn't meant that way, comes off as insulting. Take my advise for what it's worth, I haven't posted much but have tinkered on my car a read tones of info, I've got 5k in parts and need more sitting in my garage for what will be a mild setup, I've played with tones of different cars and worked for a Porsche and Audi store for a couple years, move on the RX-8 may not be for you.
