On a more serious note, as i understand it the seal itelf is simply wider. However, with most things (some exceptions granted) bigger is not always better - as many before me have pointed out. Usually the 3mm seals are used in a rebuild when there has to be machining done to clean up the grooves. No expert by any means am i however.

There also is a lot of talk about using 3mm seals in very high boost applications. Anyone know if Ibarra is running 3mm's in his drag car? The 3mm's are simply supposed to be more resistent to failure under detonation.

Years ago, I was always under the impression that 3mm's were the way to go. As of more recently I've started to sway the other way because the factory seals in the REW were good to in excess of 500hp. With proper tuning, this is more than enough for any street/daily driver application as far as I'm concerned. Add to that the Renesis seals are supposed to be even stronger, and the abuse to the apex seals based on the new port configuration is less (the side seals are now being more abused due to the side ports). Also, as we've seen on this board, the engines are taking quite a beating and just keep going. Just look at how much abuse Sapphonica's engine took before dying.

Here it is...what you've been waiting for...Renesis necrophilia!

Gouged out rotor housing, tip of an apex seal imbedded in a rotor, blahblahblah.

The last pic shows the difference between a whole apex seal (top) and the one that came out of my dearly departed.

The foetid carcass of my "ProStreet Enhanced" (pox be upon them) Renesis are at Rick's Rotary in Pleasanton. He can probably send pix.

Bummer about the engine. Has Rick given any possible reasons why it went south?

Nope.

My guess is that when it was overboosting (my guess is it spiked to >15 psi), that stressed the apex seals, then they just gave out.

Why was I overboosting? ProStreet (pox be upon them) totally screwed up my install, including a defective boost gauge, which they told me WASN'T defective, even after I pointed out that it was reading -10 with the engine shut off.

Is it physically possible to boost that high with a stock greddy kit? Scott had to modify the turbo internals to get it over 10psi.

it wasn't overboost...stock apex seals can handle 20+ psi with ease. it was bad tuning, or too much boost with not enough gas/too much timing.

You got lucky to a certain extent. I trashed every part of my old engine. Get a reman(from rosenthalmazda in arlington. 3000 grand and it is all new parts. Then do all the porting/motor work that way it is fresh. You are not going to spend anymore or anyless IMO.

Have fun and sorry to hear about your engine.

Sorry for the confusion, actually you can turn the boost (spike) up to 15psi, the ability to maintain the desired CFM/PSI at higher RPM is the problem.
