If the MAF sensor is before the turbo you will get some black smoke during shifts due to metered air that doesn't actually make it into the engine. MazdaManiac has used his BOV both ways so maybe he can give you the detailed input you might be seeking.

i never noticed any black smoke (then again i dont drive behind myself) lol. i never knew that about the black smoke!
but i do notice that it goes rich if you let off the throttle qucikly which results in a mild backfire noise (or extreme gunshot noise, depends what exhaust/midpipe combo you have)

Well my car already backfires like crazy, and ranges from dull thumps or popping to earsplitting cacophonous gunshots. My favorite type of backfire is the triple or quadruple BOOMBOOMBOOM when I throttle off sometimes or the dull THUUUUMP followed by a gigantic fireball that lights up my mirrors. Did I mention my tune is still ridiculously rich?
Isn't the MAF always on the intake pipe feeding into the turbo? I can see how that would make it run rich when I throttle off if it metered air its not actually getting so it throws in "excess" fuel.

Well you can take me off the official O.B.O.L's club roster for now, I'm breaking in my new motor after I blew the seals out of the last one.
Fun while it lasted, and addictive for sure!
Will returbo in the spring, and maybe let someone else tune it this time.....

Back on the subject of BOVs... which different BOV's have people tried? I've been listening to a bunch of them on Youtube, but its somewhat hard to tell. Where is mysql when you need him? He's owned them all from what I can tell heh.

who tuned it?

haha the gunshots are controllable by me about 95% of the time, they only happen when i want them to happen. although there are some random ones sometimes lol...for the most part, i make it pop when i want it to pop

Yeah, well I changed my BOV to vent to atmosphere this morning... went for a drive, came back, and immediately changed it back to recirc. The PFFsssshhhhh sound is cool, but the cacophonous gunshot backfires and fireballs EVERY time I throttled off is just too obnoxious. Also the throttle response was noticably worse and I just can't bring myself to trade performance for sound. I am interested in a new type of BOV though, I was looking through mysql's videos on YouTube and saw he was really happy with his Syncronic BOV. Anybody else used them?

Thanks B.
On the upside, I have a shiny fresh BNR snail ready for my install!
When guys at work ask is it fixed yet, the obvious second question is "are you going to turbo it again?" to which the answer is
" Yes, but this time I have a bigger turbo."
Doesn't sound sane when you write it out, does it.......

HKS SSQV VTA > any GReddy BOV VTA...
As far as synchronic, that's Kane's specialty
I am happy with my HKS however vented to atmosphere. I recirc'd it just for fun and didn't notice much difference besides the lack of backfires.
