Gauging Interest
Hi guys, we currently have a supercharged RX-8 in the shop for some of our upgrades (dual pass rad, cooling fan upgrade, motor mounts, aluminum undertray etc) and have decided to address an issue that always seemed overlooked with the Pettit kit, the intake.
As we know the air filter sits in the engine compartment and draws in 180-200f hot air off the radiator, compresses it adding more heat, then the hot compressed air is sent to the L/A intercooler. We have designed and built a cold air intake for the Pettit system much like our turbo kit intake where air passing across the MAF sensor is typically 3-5 degrees Fahrenheit above ambient, which is a drastic reduction in intake heat.
This significantly cooler air means more power, reduced chances of detonation as well as less heat soak of the system especially during street and lower speed driving.
The system will maintain use the Pettit maf section you already use so your maf scaling would remain as it currently is. It is constructed from lightweight 3.5" mandrel bent aluminum tubing and completely tig welded. It would also include a new filter, pre-maf air straightener and new silicone couplers and clamps.
We were curious if you guys may be interested in the benefits of a CAI for your supercharged cars while one is here in the shop?

I am intrigued but I have been working my way slowly through all 400+ pages of this thread and many people have tried a CAI before with mixed results. Have you logged any data or miles after the install?

I'm interested, especially since Kenne Bell is adamant about the use of CAI with their 'chargers.
My problem is that the particular kit I have is more of a "one off", using a different alignment of the intake. If there is some flexibility in attachment to the throttle body, you may have a second customer.

Sounds good! Is yours the gold colored blower?

As for the AEM, these are a few off the top of my head.
The cost would be more for a new AEM system
The AEM would need to be modified to work
The traditional screens in an AEM have been known to shift around at these power levels which can cause tuning issues.
The filter is in the frontal opening with the AEM which has a higher potential for sand/mud ingestion which supercharger seals really dislike.
The MAF section that these guys are using and are tuned for is different.

Gauging interest at this point 200, but if the interest is there (which there appears to be) I will.

That's exactly the approach we are taking Keck, alot of benefits from doing it this way! Scroll up a couple posts for a bit of info on it!

Seconded. Wondering what he's got planned: hood-sealed box breathing through the stock support crossmember, a "snood" wrap around the air filter, what?
Give us something to throw money at, man! I don't throw cash at ideas.

Yes we will absolutely have some pic's to post up as we actually already have two of the kits at the coating shop being powdercoated silver. Thank you for your interest in our products, we appreciate it and rest assured pic's are forthcoming!

keck i dont remember when we talked. is there a better tensioner for the belt yet?
Nope this is for a wider belt. 6 teeth vs 4 teeth. It should definitely grip better. Reading through all these posts it seems like most people ran into issues with belt slippage at a certain point. I think I made it further than most with the high boost pulley. Also running only 8lbs shld help too. And prolong engine life
