Porting w/ motor in car.

Is it possible for a machine shop to do the exhaust porting with the motor still in the car or does it HAVE to be dissasembled?

Motor has to be disassembled to get to the exhaust ports...

there is a 90 degree bend in the exhaust ports so it would be very difficult.

I'm sure there is SOME way to make some special bit that will allow you to stick it in there and take some material off, but it would be all guess work. and whats the point of doing a messy job where you are blindly hacking stuff off?

You could technially get somewhat in there but it would be risky to leave metal shavings in your engine even if you had the special tools and did sucessfully make smooth transitions.

NO...unless the guy is really small and carries a tiny dremel which he can carry with him as he travels up the exhaust and past the "CATACOMBS OF DOOM" before making a 90 degree turn after the "MANIFOLD OF DOOM"...

Lol, that's great Twinkie . I just didn't know what the ports looked like, if it was possible to just remove the exhaust manifold and remove it and get in there or not. Thanks for the quick reply guys :D

Maybe we could get the underwear gnomes to do it. They might be small enough. We just have to convince them that step 2 is "rotary engine porting".

Step 1. Collect Underpants
Step 2. ?
Step 3. Profit

Now, let's all sing! Time to go to work, work all day, we need underpants hey, we won't stop until we have underpants, yum tum yummy tum tay!

you wouldn't want to do that anyways because it would leave millions of metal pieces inside the motor........ BAD JU JU

^ Correct. Even if you could get in there, the odds of not getting metal shavings inside the motor are extremely small. It's hard enough to work in the small available area of the exhaust ports from the inside with it disassembled. I don't have any idea how you could do it through the exhaust ports from the outside. Even if you could, you can not see the size of each port in relation to others so it would be next to impossible to get them the same size. Fixing the attempt would take far longer and cost much more than just pulling it out and doing it the conventional way. If it could be done through the intake and exhaust ports from the outside, we'd all have ported engines!

Wait...so my rotor-rooter gas-powered drain-snake-made-of-polishing-material would never work? WTF?!?! Why didnt I get the memo?!?!

What, you mean you guys don't know the trick of just pouring sand down your intake with the engine at 9000rpm and letting it sand-blast the ports into a better shape?

Screw the dealers. They are such ripoffs.
The best way to deflood the car is to throw into the intake 10 dehumidifier packets.
(like those you find when you buy new shoes) and then cranking the engine for 35 seconds, and then throwing in another 5 packets.
However please do not attempt this on your own. Leave it to the professionals.

best way to deflood the car is hook a shop vac to the tailpipe...

We all know sand is good at absorbing water. Kitty litter is too. Either can be substituted. You pour some down the intake while it's cranking over. It will absorb the water and expel it out the tailpipe in compact clumps much like cleaning a litter box. A side effect is your intake gets extrude honed smooth in the process. It's a win-win situation. This has been proven by race teams everywhere but until today has been a secret to their performance.

Wouldn't that also port the intake and exhaust?

no no no, you guys got it ALL wrong!! You're supposed to BLOW the gas out of the rotor housing with the shop vac, NOT try to suck them out of the exhaust pipes.

(INSERT Spaceballs picture)
She's gone from SUCK to BLOW !!!

Dehumidifier packets only good for deflooding and carbon deposits removal. They absorb all the moisture, and then burn, but while burning they bounce around in the cam, and clean the carbon from the plugs, and the rotors. They are too soft to perform exhaust porting properly. for porting sand will do or some other abrasive is perfect.
Crushing a grinding disk with a sledge hammer, and mixing the dust with the sand will do the job even better. Just rev the engine to the red line and start feeding the stuff into the intake until it stops running. Just like that other guy described on some forum.

It works best if you can create a device that circulates the sand mixture from the exhaust back into the intake. Then all you have to do is run the car at redline for 3 mins(street port), 4 mins(bridge port), or 5 min(peripheral port).
