PTP Turbo

PTP Turbo
So from the PTP website, this seems like the best turbo kit. But what im wondering, is if it comes with all the engine managment, new injectors, spark plugs, all that good stuff, because the description for the kit is kind of confusing, because buy the engine management, it has the price, same with the fuel injectors, so does that mean i have to buy them, or does that mean they come with the kit. What else should i upgrade on my car that isnt in the kit?

I spoke to Jon several times to confirm the way the kit is priced and what you get for what $, I am about to order my kit next week so I verified everything first.
The kit is on sale right now it says save 5% regular price is $5300 and with that you get the kit with 2 injectors not all 4, and you don't get engine management.
He says with just the 2 injectors you can run 300 rwhp, to get more you need the other 2. You can buy the other 2 injectors seperatley for $200
For the $1995 you get the HKS emu with harness and the other 2 injectors.
They don't suggest you get the HKS emu because of the trouble finding a tuner that knows that emu and Rotary is not very easy. He suggested I get the Interceptor-x from mazsport and have them tune it.

Had a thought here.......please don't flame me for this.
Why not buy the Greddy kit for half the price, sell the turbo that comes with the kit and use that money to upgrade to a bigger turbo? Afterall isn't the only downfall of the Greddy kit that the turbo runs out of nuts? Other than that the Greddy kit seems to come with everything you need to put down some decent power...
What are your opinions on this?

"but how do i get mazsport to tune it for me, i live in wisconsin, do i have to drive there or something? Do i need the ignition? and where would i get it installed, because i would much rather have them install it rather than myself and taking the chance of blowing something or screwing things up" &
"What else should i upgrade on my car that isnt in the kit?"

Check out Mazsports threads on this forum. You can PM them and they can answer your questions.
From what I have seen the Stock ignition can handle up to about 320-330hp or so so you should be fine below 300 with the stock ignition.

Thats a good idea too, there is a garret turbo some people have upgraded the Greddy with to make more power.
The greddy does have a lot more problems than that though. If you search these threads you will see what alterations people have had to make to their greddy to make it work properly. They come out to about $5k in total including the greddy kit price.
To put a larger turbo on the greddy you'll be getting close to $6k, to me its not worth saving $500 to have to deal with all the fixes and upgrading the turbo on the Greddy. There are going to be fixes with all turbo kits but I would rather start with something that was made to make the higher power instead of try to make a lower one reach that point.

Is there a specific person that i can pm, or do i just search for mazsport?

It is the greddy fuel management that some say sucks not the HKS. That HKS is supposed to be very good and is used on many cars (WRX STI, Mitsu EVO, Supra) but mainly in Japan.
On the interceptor I think Mazsport is capable of setting a base map you can use until you get dyno tuned, they do that for Greddy kits but I'm not sure if they would do that with a PTP, a kit they have never worked on. You would have to ask them.
The one you would probably want to PM is MazsportScott he's the tuner and I believe the owner.

and i heard about the Esmeril turbo kit and have done a good deal reading up on that one, but what do you guys think? which one comes as a more complete package with everything?
#18
It's mazsports EMS. It is basically a Microtech. If you find a shop that knows how to tune with a microtech they can work with Scott at Mazsport over the phone. I would call them first to discuss your options though.
#20
screw it, im just gonna go with the mazsport type 1 kit, it seems like the best overall kit. thanks for all of your opinions. if you guys want to answer any of my other questions, feel free. thanks for all of your help

The additional costs for the greddy besides the fixes I detailed above, apply to all turbo kits. We're talking about boost controller, fuel injectors, fuel pumps, gauges, etc. So yes, you're going to be looking at 6k total for most people, but you'll have to add the same amount to any other kit as well

Mazsport kit is the cream of the crop for turbo kits on the RX-8, you're not going to go wrong with it.
#23
So the other ones fall short of the mazsport?
What makes the PTP not as good? And please don't just say the PTP hasn't been tested on as many vehicles as the mazsport. Just comparing product to product whats the difference?

There is nothing wrong with the PTP kit but everything is give and take. Thus, I see 2 differences in the PTP kit when comparing it to the others.
First, and probably the most important, is the engine management. PTP is big on the HKS stuff and the HKS engine management is locked so it can only be tuned by an anthorized HKS dealer. Not only are those limited but try finding one that is also an accomplished rotary tuner. Also, if a person were to purchase the PTP tuner kit and go with another engine management system it would need to have the tune created basically from scratch. This could be expensive and time consuming.
Second, is the 38mm wastegate. It is smaller than the 44mm (mazsport), 46mm (SFR), and 60mm (Esmeril). However, I believe PTP went with the smaller wastegate to get their turbo to spool quicker. Too big a wastegate and it may open early making it hard to reach the desired boost levels, and it could leak more pressure then you want, so when it closes again your turbo will have too spool up again. Too small a wastegate and the engine may over boost.
Its all Give and Take...

Thanks for the comparison and insight, very helpful. I am definatley going with the PTP, decent price for a nice kit. With injectors and intercptor-x I'll be paying $6500, same as the Esmeril price but with all name brand parts and a ball bearing turbonetics turbo. I may have to pay a little more for a tune but it will still be much cheaper than the higher priced kits.
