What's causing so many engine failures in Texas?!
Probably rx8's that never see above 5k rpm . (ATX's mainly). Think atherosclerosis but for a rotary.

Hmm maybe rotarysclerosis. Carbon buildup is bad mkay!

I'm using the Haltech E8 as a computer. The engine blocks themselves are pretty much identical in dimension, so it fits just fine. Lower intake manifold needs to be modified as it sits a little too high - I had done a 20B in an FD a while back and the problems are mostly similar. I am using the stock 6spd transmission.

guitarjunkie - I'm in the Los Angeles area.

no ****? i'll come and hang out a bit if you want a hand.

i've got a set of fd manifolds i'll trade you for the cosmos if you don't feel like modifying the lower to fit.

i'll even port match the fd lower to the cosmo block.

Thanks for the offer, no idea at this point if the FD lower is any shorter or not though - the runners in the cosmo manifold look huge compared to the FD as well. Let me do some more test fitting and let you know, I'll give you a shout when I'm working on it next

cool beans.
i can bring the manifold down if you want to measure it, but i'm pretty sure it's shorter.

I have all the pictures of Ryan's motor after we took the bitch apart on Saturday evening. It's probably contains the most trashed rotor and housing that I've ever seen.

Unfortunately all of these pictures were taken from my cell phone so the quality isn't great but you can definitely get the idea.

So why is it that you are doing this instead of the dealer?
I assume all the damage is from broken seal parts going through.
Did I miss something here, is this turbo'ed or stock?
I hope RotaryGod sees this thread. Like to see what he or MazdaManiac and GuitarJunkie have to say.

He's turbo'd, the third dongle install on the GReddy Emanage caused one of his rotors to malfunction causing that damage..

I know that's what is speculated because of the timing of everything, but it seems unlikely, doesn't it? No one else has reported anything like this that I know of. Also, wasn't Ryan running only 3-4 psi when it happened?

Pettit did mention that the turboed engine they took apart a few months ago looked pretty beat up too. Maybe the turbo is beating up the engine pretty bad, but just no bad enough to destroy it.

I have never seen a rotor that trashed before! That's impressive. I guess that's the result of the engine not being able to expell the seal parts out a peripheral exhaust port. They just slide around and go wherever they want to.

If you want to get rid of one of the dead housings I'd be more than happy to give you a few bucks for one. I want to develop a new better flowing exhaust sleeve and I don't need a usable housing to do this.

Yeah that seems to be the conclusion I came to as well that the seal parts just had nowhere to go so they basically went ahead and trashed everything.

Did you notice the side seals are so far into the rotor that they have no chance to come out? Also one of the corner seals was actually turned and not sitting properly? I thought that was odd as well.

Yeah and those irons are fucked.
The ports were jagged and rough as **** but the irons faces themselves were also torn up, can't fix that.

maybe i should take a closer look. it looked like only the port closing edge was jacked on the iron i saw...that'd go away anyway.

**** it, ieven if they are ruined, drop them off--i need more practice anyway.

***edit***
i just looked at all the pics.. um, yea. boom
but i know a guy who can make you a really nice fish tank or ant farm from the rotor housings :p

Oh come on now ... a little bondo, some tape, a bit of silicone ... it'll be good as new.

All that from a seal!

It looks like you had metal in your oil.
