Series 5 RX7 turbo into RX8

Hi all.
After my phenomenal engine blow up. See: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/big-mishap-small-place-195567/

I've decided to go for a different setup. I've decided on the series 5 as I am pretty happy with their reliability under stress full conditions. SOooo I went and got myself a motor . Test fitted it to the RX8. Made up some engine mountings. Sorted some of the electrical stuff. Took it out again. Stripped it down for a refresh. There was almost no wear on the motor. Decided that std is not good enough. So at the moment its at my engine builder/rotary guru for a proper "extend streetport",dowling and race 2mm apex seals. Yes,I'm building a bitch!

Will run it with the std turbo but with modified compressor wheel and housing for now as my funds are a bit limited now.

Will post some photo's as I go on.

Did you test fit the motor with the turbo attached? I HIGHLY doubt its going to fit.

The FD motor has different engine mounts. That will affect the way you shoehorn the motor into the SE3P chassis. On the series 6 the engine mounts on the rear iron. On the s4 and s5 motors it mounts through the middle iron.

As far as which is a "better" or "stronger" motor, well once you start modding them the differences start to disappear. An s5 and an s6 engine with a similar turbo and porting aren't going to have majorly different power outputs

Ok here we go.

"arghx7" - Already made up the mounts. Modified the S5 rhs (plug side) mount to fit. Usses the same mounting holes as the RX8 Made up a custom one for the turbo side and had to weld a plate onto the front structure. Still using the RX8 rubber mount.

"dznutzuk" - Not so easy to come by in SA.

"hornbm" - Goes in like a charm. My steering shaft even sits on the same side and clears it with about 2 ".

Had a throttle adaptor made up from ally. So now I can use the drive by wire and the S5 std manifold!

That's a nice piece. so you will be using the factory computer? will you have the MAF sensor? you'll want to block off the idle air control/bypass air control valve on the side of the UIM.

arghx7: I'm using a aftermarket ecu but I've transfered all the sensors incl the crank sensor. Not going to use the MAF. I'm blocking off the idle control of the S5.

We've done this before on another Rx8 with a 13b monsterport.

There is a late 91 engine that is just as strong as the REW engine. The dowel areas have increased support like the S6 REW's. T2 engines have larger primary ports than REW and the RE engines stock for stock. The BT's have smaller runners which is good for TQ :D.

Mind snapping some pics? I'd be real interested. My main beef with with the rx8 turbo kits is the lack of room to make a proper manifold. Everyone I've seen is subpar at best.

However now that I think about it, depending on how you mounted the motor, it could yield some extra space around the exhaust. Anyway... PIIIICSSSS

Will Take some pics when I get the motor back. I will make some measurements at the same time as I want to construct a new manifold to fit a larger turbo at a later stage. The fact that you have 2 peripheral ports make construction less cumbersome and to my opinion you'll have more space. But you can only go so big if you want to keep your turbo beside the motor. If you bring it forward into the bay then space becomes a problem for me. As is said before, the steering shaft runs on the same side. (bummer)But it's possible.

This is my Beetle's turbo manifold and pics of the blank of plates, and my new cover for the S5 CAS. Still waiting for the Idle air control valve's cover.

Wow, that's impressive stuff! Rather heartbreaking seeing the pics in your previous thread...
How far along is this engine install, & how much did the S5 engine set you back?

I paid R6200-00 for the motor. Send it in for Street porting and race apex seals ans so forth. Motor is done, but I'm caught up in work so the install is going a bit slower than expected. Should start working on it a gain in the next week or so.

Nice. But I noticed your brake master cylinder is on the wrong side of your engine bay. You may want to get that looked at, could be a problem
