skc supercharger build
#76
Supercharger unit has been pulled apart. The leak is new and therefore unrelated to the original issue.
The second leak is around the upper gear housing. This could have been due to the fact that it is a second hand unit and it has been opened by Hymee to attempt a repair.
We also noticed a second minor leak on the front of the layshaft. It could be caused by the grooves on the shaft itself. We plan on getting the shaft around the front O ring polished while we have the unit out of the car.
The original oil leak around the rear housing has been resolved by the installation of the oil return line.

I finally get to drive the car. It is very loud so I may need a second resonator to keep things quiet it has a very raspy sound.
The drive characteristics are identical to stock except the speedometer shows I am accelerating a lot quicker. I will have to be more careful on the road.
I will try and drive along the mountain road tomorrow to give it a good workout.

Back in the workshop as the exhaust is unbearable. Looking at putting in a large second resonator and quiet exhaust.
I bolted on the factory exhaust however the increased back pressure was causing a knock around 6000 rpm. It still had a very strong raspy note.
Also investigating a minor oil leak. Hope its not the blower again.
Another issue is a slight bogging down when you suddenly press the accelerator pedal. It should be fixed by repositioning the MAF sensor? This issue and the decel issue will be resolved at the next dyno tune. Unfortunately, the tuner is busy building a monster GTR for Superlap at eastern creek raceway and will only be able to get to my car after the event.
The car is driveable so I will have to live with the minor niggles for a little while.

More likely to do with the bypass valve .

We are working on a the new cat back exhaust and a second resonator located between the midpipe and catback. We tried out the HKS legacy exhaust briefly and the noise level was ok however, the raspy note gets high pitched at the higher RPM and this is what I am trying to iron out.
I know I am being fussy however my favorite racetrack has a 95db noise limit and I want to get the car compliant otherwise I don't see the point of all the extra power as I cannot use it elsewhere.

I am getting very cautious as we think there was a knocking sound from the engine which started after I installed the stock exhaust. While we did not confirm the noise on the dyno it was a concern.
The car was tuned with a high flowing exhaust and a lesser system would require a re tune.

Picked up the beast today. Still a tad loud however it is more bearable, we installed the largest resonator possible. I sits between the mid pipe and the cat back.
I now have a 1400 km drive to the RX8 nationals where I will get a chance to put the system to test. Hopefully there will be some footage to share.

Just returned fron the 7th annual RX8 nationals track day. A big thank you to Danny and his team for getting my car ready for the event.
I covered almost 3000 km of freeway, highway and city driving to get to and back from the event. The power is addictive and I found it very useful in overtaking situations.
The track day was a full day event with about six sessions consisting of around 15 laps around the 2.2km track. Unfortunately the morning sessions was marred by my ABS and DSC constantly turning its self off when I tried to start pushing the car after the tyres had warmed up. I ended up locking it up on the back straight and ended up in the sand trap.
The problem suddenly disappeared after lunch and this allowed me to start pushing the car to its limits with late brakeing and gear changes over 8000 rpm and occassionally hearing the buzzer in the background.
The oil temperature hit 100 degrees and very quickly moved back to 80 as soon as the session ended. I was still learning how the car behaves on the track as it is very different to NA. The engine brakeing is also very strong and I could have saved on using the brakes a bit more.
I did notice more oil leaks in the afternoon session however, it did not reappear on the trip back home.
After living with the system over the last few days I am absolutely thrilled with its performance. Here is the link for some of the photos:

Once all the niggles have been sorted this kit is simply amazing and you can push the car to its limit just like you can in a stock car.

Nice! I will be running a closed set up on my oil system and hope that takes care of any oil leak issues that may pop up.
Glad to hear you are up and rocking and rolling, you are inspiration for me to get my unit installed already.

Feels like you are driving a V8.

I may just have it on for track days and hot summer days.

Glad to see and hear the car at the Nats SKC. I'm living vicariously now
Best time? Highest speed on the front straight? Holding it flat through the kink?

I had some issues with ABS in the morning session which caused me to skid into the sand trap on the back straight. This also caused a major flat spot on the two front tyres. The video shows vibration on the main straight.
I then swapped the tyres to the rear and this helped a bit. My peed on the straight line was hitting 176 kmph with a best time of 1:11.36. I was standing on the brakes just past the kink.
As I had only just picked the car up on Thursday and then drove to Golburn on Friday, I am still learning how get the most out of the car. I am sure I can get better times next year.

Good fun on the road though, huh?
Enjoy mate, glad you're getting the kinks ironed out.
