Nice work man, does it start hot and idle? Now replace that coolant reservoir.

It does hot start and idle! Though still just a tad hard starting. But I think my starter is pretty tired. It's the original and I really worked the last few days... the overflow tank is on my want list

Well that's good. And yeah I saw that 230RPM crank on the compression tester and figured your starter was not doing well. Get an S2 starter, it will blow you away.

Yes that S2 starter makes a world of difference for tired engines let alone for freshly rebuilt ones.
On a side note

Brettus changed his avatar pic hehe

Ordered that starter, should be here tomorrow. I needed some Red Line for the trans anyway

The guy that loaned me the comp tester asked if I did the test with throttle wide open. I had not, my first time, whoops. He said not doing this would make the numbers low. We plan to retest at some point.

When you hold the pedal down it cuts fuel but I am not sure if the throttle plate is wide open or not. I tested that tester along with our rotary diagnostics one and the Mazda factory one and all three were pretty close. We used the factory method for testing.

Fixed the seal and all back together. Just waiting on the Red Line MT-90 and starter, which I should have in the morning.

For anyone reading this and attempting a rebuild here was my fatal flaw with the oil leak. Silly me, when I took apart the motor the o-ring came off with the rear gear. Looking at the rear gear there is somewhat of a groove at the base, so I assumed this is where the seal goes:

Wrong It wasn't until we saw the leak that I pulled out another rear iron and gear to figure it out that I saw the groove in the iron:

I actually just found this on Mazdatrix website:

"* If using the RX8 rear gear in an earlier 13b engine, you must add sealant where the rear gear o-ring WOULD be. There is no groove to hold the o-ring because the Renesis engine mounts the o-ring in the side housing rather than on the gear. We recommend using Hylomar, but a THIN layer of silicone sealant will also suffice."

Pretty cool build. Just wanted to chime in on the starter... A cranking speed of 230RPM is bad? My car is a 2012 with the upgraded starter and it cranks at 180RPM

Don't you have an auto? We only speak manual here. I have an S2 starter in my 04' and it cranks between 290-300RPM. Several others local have it as well and the results are similar, some even over 300RPM. The standard minimum for a compression test is 250RPM.
