Turbo + "Watered Down Ethanol Gas" = Bad?
Heya
Recently, they've started putting 10% Ethanol into the gas. Are there any concerns about this negatively impacting FI'd 8's, possibly causing detonation?
Thanks!

hmmm hasn't it always been 10% ethanol? If you ever pay attention to the gas prices, it will say something like $3.25 9/10 gallon. so you are only getting 9/10's of gas and 10% ethanol in your fuel. someone correct me i'f wrong.

i believe it they could add whatever they wanted to the gas to raise the octane rating......(10% of ethanol or any other substance liek it)...but i though tit was only starting the 1st of may that the government said they had to put 10% ethanol in. i could be wrong though

teh 9/10 has nothing at all to do with the fuel quality. i thought it was an extra tax they stuck on it.

anyways e10 is nothign big... all cars made now are supposed to be run on it with out any problems...in truth though who knows. now if you went with a higher blend...tunnign woudl be paramount...but then again when itsn't it

Ethanol has a higher octane number than gasoline and ethanol has a higher latent heat (requires more heat to evaporate and therefore increases cooling of the intake charge). To put it simply: Ethanol added to gasoline will reduce detonation probability.

the government has allowed up to 10% alcohol in gas for years. i'm sure each company has its own fuel formulation to run it at standard stoich.

Anyone now when were gona see FLEXFUEL
If anyone has seen the advertisments for FLEXFUEL. Ive been looking into it, they say 85% ethanol and 15% gas for less then $1.25 a gallon. ow, and failed to mention 105 octane woohoooo. Cant wait to get ahold of some for testing. Gotta see if anything in the fuel system has any adverse reaction before we start tuning it in though. If anyone nows if anything from the gas tank to the injectors may be non ethanol safe let me now. Thanks, Moon http://www.gm.com/company/onlygm/ cut and paste

so 3.25 9/10 is really 3.26/gal. apparently gas companies think everyone flunked 3rd grade math

you'll need to inject a LOT more fuel.

Yeah, about 30% more fuel to run E85. Stoic for E85 is closer to a AFR of 8.5:1 . And max power rich is about 7.8:1. A couple of guys in the Subaru community have been experimenting with it.
Just by changing fuels, a 2.5RS with light mods is as fast as a stock WRX. A WRX converted over can run more boost, with less turbo spool time, and a cooler running engine. Torque is greatly increased.
A couple of things though, as far as we know, Mobile 1 is the only oil compatible with Alcohol. Also, Ethanol is a powerful cleaner, and with as rich as you have to run it, it may end up cleaning your combustion chamber. This could be very bad for a Rotory Engine.
I plan on trying E85 in my RS as soon as its available in my area. The high octane will help me be safer with my supercharger project, also the extra power from changing fuels alone makes me want to try it.

I too wonder what it would take for our 8's to run on E85, would that hurt progress on the rotary? it would be cool if Mazda came out with a E85 Rotary (or flex fuel) just so eventually we all could say bye bye to the BIG OIL companies.
The thing is…you take a fuel economy hit, while gas would still be cheaper to fill up.

not to mention they dont even have E85 in NYC.
Most people in New York was like "what da fuxk is E85? Ethanol has been in our gas for years? will it harm my engine? what is Ethanol ?"
Not joking here.
