Turbo's and no Systems

With all these threads and people waiting for turbo's to come out that should have been out a couple months or last year makes me wonder u can spend $3000 for a turbo but till have to put in another $2000 the to make it work right from Greddy. Also PTP people have been waiting and waiting and still no luck from them and spend about 6 grand for the kit and more change to go into it , To me it just seems a lot easier to get a shop to custom make one, You can flame me all u want, but i saving up so i can try to get custom setup for x-mas from T-Blown because if u want the car to go fast u gotta have doe, not 2 or 3 years of time waiting for something to come out to think it might work a little better.

The kit runs about $3200. And it works really well out of the box. You do not need to change anything, unless you wanted extras like BOV, gauges, etc.

If I'm not mistaken the PTP price you're quoting is without fuel management..

You can try to make one yourself for cheaper than GReddy, but I doubt you're going to see much savings. A lot of the work is in the tuning, which you'll have to start from scratch with.

Just get the tubes and corners of the right size. and raw rubes are real cheap.

Nothing even close to what they charge retail.

A very useful tool I picked up: http://www.martelbrothers.com/catalo...t-p-16039.html It is called Modular Air Intake Mock Up Kit. It is like $10 or so. It is strictly for mocking up, can't be used as actual tubing. Contains a bunch ot plastic 3" bends and straights with different angles, that can be connected wit fasteners. Took me 25 minutes to model the Intercooler -> Throttle body piece, and try how it fits. The cool part of it is you can get it properly shaped right on the car. Saves time and money and can be reused as many times as needed.

heh. I can one up that.

For 1/10th the cost of your modular air intake mockup kit, I can create the same thing out of a pack of bendy straws and a marshmallow.

Anyway, you're misguided if you think the tubes are the bulk of the cost of the turbo kit.

I can see you saving 500-1000 off the Greddy kit doing it yourself, but you're going to easily spend several times that on labor paid if you're having the kit privately made (which is what the original poster mentioned doing). Not to mention tuning it from scratch.

Or get a welder for $100 off eBay (which is what I did) and weld it yourself. Welding is not that difficult of a task once you get a hang of it.

As with tuning; you need to tune the car regardless whether this is a Greddy or anything else. Yes, it will work with Greddy base kit, but what is the fun of that? If you know that there is much more potential to be unlocked you'll end up monkeying with it anyway, and spend the money to get all the other stuff, like the gauges, and BOV and all the rest of it.

Bottom line is: if you got money to throw at the car, then it doesn't matter what you get, but if you want a turbo, and for less, and you are handy; DIU is the way to go because

1. It'll keep you busy for a while.
2. You get exactly what you want (and no one to blame if it's not).
3. You actually get to enjoy the DIU process.
4. When you are done, all your (non-techy) friends will **** their pants
5. You'll probably save some money because you can get everything you need for a full turbo setup, including the Interceptor-X for under $3K.
(Yes I know you can buy Greddy on eBay for 2500, but I mean everything you need…)

Oh, I agree.... doing the work yourself, you can save quite a bit of money. No doubt about it.

On the other hand, the original poster was saying he'd be able to get it done cheaper than greddy - by having a shop custom make him a kit. I think he's going to find it'll cost him a lot more, and he'll not be able to fall back on the the support of other members who have the same kit on this forum. RX8club is a huge resource that should not be underestimated.
