VATN Turbos (aka Aerocharger)
Okay ex-Miata (or ex-NSX) owners, someone must know something about this. What was this like and what was its reliability? Any of these things still running today? It looks pretty complex but to me the advantages seems to outweight the downside on the complexity. This turbo is definitely great for a remote turbo application (i.e. turbon in the muffler area.)
Apparently they stopped producing these for a while and now a company called HiPerformance bought off the patent and plan on manufacturing these things again.

Just called the manufacturer.
They don't make single turbos that are big enough to run at the required airflow for RX-8. But definitely can run twins. Big downside is the cost. $1895 per turbo!!!

Variable turbine geometry is pretty cool. Ford uses them on their current generation diesels. Those turbos don't have internal wastegates at all, but on diesel applications that isn't very important.
Here is a diagram of the variable turbine geometry on the newer generation of Ford diesels:

And here is how it works. Notice how the VGT actuator uses duty control without a wastegate. That means that the exhaust manifold and other aspects of the turbo system were carefully designed to make boost controllable.

I had one on my Miata for about a year.
Well, I OWNED on for about a year.
It went back to Aerocharger 3 or 4 times to have the bearings replaced.
It was stupendously fragile.
I would imagine the Garrett version is superior, but for application it is totally unnecessary because of our extremely high exhaust energy vs. power requirements.
