...4 port, 6 speed AT? {flame suit on}
basically, anyone know for sure, if it would be possible to put the 6 speed AT on a 4 port? i know its a long shot but as far as i know, i havent read of anyone trying this. i mean i could imagine how it would be possible; both engines are limited to the same rpms, both automatic... should be "plug n play", in the sense you wouldnt need much extra. im just not sure how the electronics would take it...
i really wanted to poke at the possibility of this being possible to see if it really is, or at least the replies i could get.
please no "sell it and get a 6 speed auto or manual", thats not the idea behind this thread. This is the AT-Specific Performance Mods section, and this would certainly qualify.

Any thing is possible if you have the $ and the expertise. (Someone has done it on these forums.) But why would you want to do it? If your looking for more speed then go FI, if your looking for more performance then go FI, if your looking for more control from your four speed then go FI. Going FI is a lot cheaper than trying to change trannys.

transmission bell housing is different on the 6pd AT and the 4spd AT, as well as the rear iron on the engine.
i've researched to the moon and back, any thing is possable its getting the parts line up, as for me, my swap will be done next year as soon as I land a parts car (something that was in a wreck etc)..
it can be done, but its going to cost ya... if your really want the 6spd, trade up or prepair for an nice list of parts and a nice bill (if your doing it your self you can save on labor)
good luck.

Possible? Yes. Beneficial? Not really, your car will still be slower than a 10 year old Camry. Expensive? Yes. And considering how hard up you have been to sell that AFR gauge I doubt you can afford it. There is a reason the other thread got bashed

Key thing you'll need is the tranny computer from the 6 speed. Then you'll have to get it to play nice with the 4 port ecu. Or you can take both ecu's from the 6 port and try to get them to work with the 4 port engine.
This is above and beyond the physical getting it to bolt up problems you'll have. In the end, the gearing change of the 6 speed at will net you basically 0. More than likely it will make your car slower since the 6 port at has more power than the 4 port and the tranny is geared to take advantage of it.

If you gentlemen would use your search button and find the thread, you will find that the Mazda mechanic that did the trick recommended that you buy a wrecked 8 for the parts needed to make the transfer. Not only the tranny computer but the whole EMS will need to be changed.
If you dead set on making the change I would suggest that you sell your 4port and purchase a 6port, it would be cheaper.
If you really want performance just FI your 4port and everything will work as intended. The 4port tranny is very strong and is taking all that I throw at it with my supercharger.

Remember everyone, Boost is boost when the day is done. Tuning is a vastly different realm that makes Boost by whatever means safe.
When anyone starts to ponder the "4port to 6 port swap/tranny swap" there are so many diffrent little things that are often not thought of. Throw the Electronic communication protocals on top of the mechanical "need-to's" and it becomes non-condusive.
Sure, I have an emotional attachement to my 8. 1st LY sold in Az, ect, ect. Yes i want moawr power. How far will i go to get this power i want? I don't know and i'm too far down the path to change it now.
So in short, free post.
But the TQ sucks, will not keep the required flow at needed pressures, and then will eventully die.

If you find one be sure and purchase the whole vehicle....you will need the wiring, the TCU module, the dash, center console, the complete bell housing, the drive shaft and maybe the rear end.
Just trade off your AT or just be satisfied with what you have. If you want more speed then FI the engine.

that would be an electronic nightmare IMO, it would make more financial sense to trade up
I believe the 5 spd is a Miata trans or a variation of same. Mazda Motorsports imports it for racers, their part# R51K-03-000 for $2750
