6sp AT Mileage Question - What are you guys getting on the hwy?

I've been running some gearing calculations on what different diff ratio's would do when cruising at 70mph

you guys should be cruising at 2800-2900rpm by my calcs at 70mph is that right? if so what kinda hwy mileage are you guys getting?

Brillo,
I only have 1200 miles on my 6AT so far and only one tank of that was almost all at highway speed. That tank was driven at 74mph and I got 19.38mpg.

Ironically, every other tank driven so far has been in the 19s also. This includes the first couple tanks when I was nursing the engine through the break-in and the last tank where I drove a little more...ahem...aggressively.

From what I've read on this board I'm not terribly surprised about the gas mileage. In fact, I care quite little about the mileage I receive, which you wouldn't know based on the meticulous records I keep that count every drop of gas and oil that I put in this vehicle. Amazing how much I'm pampering what is essentially just another car (heresy if true, but my actions indicate this isn't just another car).

Long answer short: 19+ mpg, but only one tank within/near your reference criteria.

Flame if necessary for a noob to presume posting a response.

ok,
note to you.... at 1200 miles beat the hell out of the motor and brakes... search bedding... for the brakes...

you mpg sounds low... as a 6 speed 04 owner. i have to run the crap out of it to get down to 18 or 19 mpg....

the ? is what are you rpm at 75mph???

beers

I drove the 6sp AT and I was at something like 2500 RPM at 80mph. I know that sounds pretty rediculous, but that's what I remember. It was only like 2 weeks ago, lol.

I would think the 6spd AT guys would be getting great why mileage by my calcs, but I would need someone to test the car consistently at 70mph.

As to who drives 70, well first off, for most places its the legal speed limit, and above 65mph, all cars mileage begins to really fall off. If your driving 3 hours or less, 80mph does almost nothing for you as far as getting you there appreciably faster, it only gets you worse mileage and potential for a ticket.

If I remember right, the 6th gear is something like .54 or .56 (that's some serious overdrive), and the final drive is the same as the Mx-5, 4.3something.

I'm at 3250-3300 at 80mph iirc. And .54 and 4.3 would put the 6spds rpm at 2501 (using 3300 for the 4spd at 80) I think I'm at 2700rpm at 70mph, so the 6spd should be at just under 2100rpm. (I don't see how you can keep the converter in lockup at that rpm, though, so it may be higher)

The only problem I have with the new 6spd is that ridiculously low rpm at cruise. You have to downshift too many times to get to a usable gear. I have a hard time pulling not so steep hills in 4th at any altitude above 2000ft. It'd be even more prevalent with the 6spds low ratios, which can't be good for mileage.
