best mods to get the hp closer to the manual

I'll snap his neck.
Someone smarter than me will have to chime in here, but I think you have to get an AP specific to the 4-port, 4AT model. Not sure if it is possible to get a AP for the 6-port to work on the 4-port ECU without getting Cobb involved to change it over.
Again, I'm not sure on this, but I would investigate it before purchasing a used AP.

all APs are the same, but the maps are different depending on who you buy it from.
at the moment MazdaManiac is the only person i know who offers a 4AT AP that comes with a safe basemap and he is able to tune it.

When I ordered my AP way back when, I had to go to the Cobb website to download the Race Tuner software. They required my specific version of car (4-port, 4AT) to get me the specific software for my computer to work with my AP. The Race Tuner software did come with base maps, but as I recall they were NA maps that we had to modify for FI.
Since Cobb is supposed to be or already has discontinued the AP for the RX-8, I don't know if you can get the Race Tuner software from them anymore. MazdaManiac would definitely be a good person to check with on that sort of info.

I figure the 4-ports make between 140 and 185 HP at the crank.
They are almost ALL horribly tuned right from the factory - much worse than the 6-port, which probably says something about Mazda's confidence in the 4-speed autotragic tranny.
FWIW, the 6-port, 6-speed autos make about the same power as the 6-port manuals.

If it was a 4 port you ran into one of us in 4 port FI group.....if it was a 6 port, yea it could happen as there is just a few hp difference.

I have seen several FI set ups for the 4-port engine that in Europe comes with 5speed Manual Transmission. So having 618 you can we go up to 320bhp (crank) and with 3071 you can go over 360bhp. You can even try GT30 for more than 400bhp.
So 4-port FI can produce serious horse power gains even similar with 6-port FI

An NA mod that someone can try to his/her rx8 is to swap the auto-trans for a 6MT and install Cobb Access Port. In a drag race 6port will start to make difference from 4th gear and on but the difference will not be so great comparing a stock 4-port.

it was an 6 speed automatic with paddle shifters. the reason it pulled away from me is because my rx8 won't rev past 8100 rpms in third so I'm forced to down shift which cause the revs to drop to about 7000. I'm still trying to figure out what's causing this.

Plus the Rx8 is a handling car... If had 500 to spend on a 8 I would get an exhaust for the sound and make suspension upgrades along with tires.
My friends Rx8 only has a exhaust and intake. No cob, No coils, no midpipe. And he can keep up with 400hp Rx7 cause of the handling..
Out of the box the car is solid, but with a few hundred bucks, you can make it even better.

I obviously underestimate the value of a K&N air filter? Our car is far from solid. We're starved in every possible way power wise compared to the competition.... and the one thing we have in our favor we fall back on as our salvation at the first sign of someone suggesting our car sucks.
When did great handling ever help you get the jump on someone at a traffic light, or an on ramp?

this i what I would agree this. I have no exhaust mods and just a K&N filter (if that does anything at all, i doubt it) but I spent all my money on suspension and would I like more power, sure.....but the handling now is just amazing that I don't care much about adding power now. I've done basic track day things with mine AT and on a straight, you are screwed, but soon as corners start coming, you'll pull away from a lot of stuff and they won't catch up till you hit that straight again.

Even better doesnt mean you have to add a FI to make your car feel better.
Not everything is about getting a jump on a straight, heck if that is all you care about i can see why you think our car is lacking in power in EVERYWAY POSSIBLE.
The previous poster obviously meant handling not power, and your contribution to make fun of his a few hundred buck comment was off topic and invalid.... obviously.

No matter what, this car is way more fun than my '95 Geo Prizm
*(power is good too, but this is my starter car, for power upgrades I'll think about graduating to a newer MT when I feel I'm ready)

I have a mod that actually puts money in your pocket, and gives noticable acceleration improvement.
Next time you need tires, buy 225/40r18 instead of 225/45r18. You'll be geared down about 3%, the tires will be about $13-$20 less per tire, and the cornering will be better.
Use the money you save to buy a good motocycle 2 stroke for 4 oz per 12 gals in your gas.
Your butt dyno can feel both mods.

Yeah, there's a 1 cm larger gap, and 1cm lower to the pavement, but man it looks baller!
My 8 measures 13-1/2 inches from center cap to fender in rear, and 14 inches in the front.
The Hankook Ventus V12 in 225/40r18 are softer than the 225/45r18 Kumho Spt's they replaced.
With it now geared down 3%, the acceleration is way better, and feels like more than 3%, and all I gave up is the 125mph fuel cut top end which is now 121 and fast enough.
I'll have pics after my next track day Nov 20th at H2R San Marcos Tx.
Read the premix thread on this site, but what you do is put motorcycle 2T 2 cycle oil at about 4oz per fillup of about 12 gallons. You could run even more, so don't worry about measuring. I just tip the bottle a little and read the side marker to guess about 4 oz. before I put the gas in. Pennzoil air cooled 2 cycle is good, but you might need to order. The Pennz is what ultralight airplanes use. It's thinner than some 2T's so I'd run about 6 oz of it.

I just got an '04 4AT and am more interested in handling than HP*. I'd like to know more about mods that provide good handling improvement for the dollar. I'm new here and searching for relevant threads, but if someone could refer me to any particularly good threads on this topic, I'd appreciate it.

Best single handling mod is stiffer anti-roll bars. You will be amazed at how much difference that makes, especially if you take your car to the track or an autocross.
