gas mileage to the tank, what do you get?
ok so this thread maybe moved, i post it here because im looking for the AT's only and all i want to know is how many miles do you get to the tank? as of right now i've stopped speeding and flooring it and i'm doing a helluva lot better than i was last tank. so i want to know what the optimum is in our cars. oh and while i'm at it, is the 8's fuel cell 13 or 13+half?

Well, I don't fill up all the way any longer (dollar-cost averaging and it's lighter), but commuting 60/40 city/hwy, and putting just over 13 gallons in, I'd usually get 240-245 a tank (sometimes as low as 220). The most I ever got (highway only, 70mph...ish) was 360, which was just over 14 gallons. Almost 40 miles on the low fuel light will make you sweat. I could've gone farther, but I chickened out.
On a side note, got my BP gas card today, which'll save me about $0.15 per gallon at todays prices (93). Just gotta remember to pay the bill off every month.
And I believe the tank is officially like 14.5, but the most I've ever crammed in there was 14.1xx

I have been getting about 165 miles to a tank, but hoping the tuneup I got Monday will help some. I do tend to keep the revs up a lot though. I generally run at least one gear lower than I should. It keeps it ready to rock when I put my foot into it. Besides, it just sounds better.

I will get 200-240 miles per tank, and thats running it down to leaving 1 gallon in the tank.
I have found that it doenst matter if i baby it (shift at 3K and get to 6th ASAP VS redlining the **** out of it all the time.) I get the same mileage

hahaha I Love these threads.. for my luvly 04 At with just now 40.9k miles on her.. I get anywhere from a 8.5 mile per gallon tank to a now average 13.5 miles per gallon tank since seeing my gf. My highest pure highway driving has been 17.8mpg. One day I'll see a 20mpg tank but I doubt it.

I have an 04AT. Used to get 19mpg. Then started to change oil, make mods, etc... More like 15mpg now...
Forgot to add, that I'm having fun, so it does not bother me. If I wanted to save gas, than I would have bought an eco-box.
I think the "secret" is type of oil, MAF (clean or replace), coolant, fuel additive to clean deposits and carbon, O2 sensor, or something going on with the ECU.... Also, I agree that I get close to the same gas mileage whether I baby it or rev the hell out of it.
The reason why I question the MAF, O2, oil, coolant, fuel additive to clean deposits and carbon, ECU combo is that when I first got it from my dealer and when I took it back to my dealer for maintenance the gas mileage improved and was in the 19mpg range. When I reset the ECU (press brake 20 times) because of mods (like exhaust, etc...), the gas mileage noticeably decreased and never came back up to the 19mpg. Also, it seems some people have better luck than others, even if the same year and same mods (though oil and coolant combo could be different).
I'm still studying the gas mileage issue and asking different Mazda techs...

THis seems like a good post for this info. before upgrading to the '06 AT, I had an '04 AT, and kept near perfect gas milage spread sheet. This is with about a 60/40 split of City/Highway driving over about 2.5 years.
**edit** woops cpied from the wrong spreadsheet, actual data updated
Number of Fill Ups 180
Total Cost of Gas $4,890.13
Total number of Gallons 2000.3
Average Cost per Gallon $2.436
Average Cost per Fill Up $27.17
Total Miles 34,833
Total Miles Per Gallon 17.4
Average Miles Per Gallon 17.4
Average Fill Up 11.1
The most fuel I put in was 14.9 gallons, so 15.9 would be about right for the slam full capacity.
The best mpg I got was 25.3 Highway driving at about 15k on the odometer. The worst was 9.5 mpg city driving at 22k on the odometer.
I've been doing the same with my '06 and will post a summary after I get a good statistical data set.

'06 here and about 50/50 driving. My wife driving normally half the time and me driving like an ******* the other half will easily get 300 or a little more out of a tank. Most of the time I fill up it takes about 13.5 gallons.

wow quite a variety, i found that when i drive normal i'll push 220 to 230, when i baby it and dont speed on the freeway then i'll get 260. not bad difference but still, i would like to get 300 to the tank. that would be nice.

Late post? I barely go on.. bump!
On average i put in about $40.00 worth of gas and get about 285. Haven't really had the guts to drive for more than 3 miles with the gas light on to find out exactly what i get. The max gallons on the rx8 is 14.9 gallons. I think someone said 15.9.
What do guys think about this?

If you need to question your gas mileage, I think you purchased the wrong vehicle. The window sticker mileage estimates should have made you think. Before mods I got 20 to 21 highway and did not have the guts to check in town driving. After mods I now get 25 highway. Again I still do not have the guts to check in town driving as I drive aggressively (I think it's about 10 mpg). Even with the little warning light on I've never been able to put more that 13.9 gallons in it.
