Question Getting 30k Service Done Tomorrow, Need Some Recommendations

Hey guys I am taking my car to a shop tomorrow that works specifically on rotarys. They work on a lot of Rx-7's and Rx-8's as well. I am getting my 30k service done and changing all the fluids since it is less than half the cost of the dealership. My car is an '04 AT, and I bought it with about 30 or 31k miles so the previous owner obviously didn't get the service done. Now that I almost have 40k, I have discovered for sure that it was never done and needs to be. Everytime I asked the dealership, they said they would check and never got back to me. Anyways, I would like to know what fluids you guys suggest so I can pick them up at an autoparts store today. Also, please state the exact name and how much I should get? Also, I will probably get Redline fluids since most people have had good success with them. I plan on changing to 5w-30 oil. My car is used as a daily driver, but I sometimes take spirited drives and could possibly do a track day. Any suggestions would be greatly apprecaited. Thanks.

I don't remember if the 30K covers the trans fluid. If you're replacing it pick up 12 qts of Either Redline or Royal purple ATF. That usually covers a full flush/replacement.
For engine oil 6 or 12 qts Royal Purple 5w-30 10w-30. my typical oil change is 5 qts.

Rear diff? RP, or Lucas synthetic 70w90 gear oil. Read the label well. some don't work well with LSD's if you have one.

Coolant 50/50 mix water/anti-freeze with a bottle Red line Water wetter or RP's Purple ice.

Who's the Shop?

Thanks. I do have a LSD. The shop is Rick's Rotary Performance. Do you think they would charge more or less if I bring my own fluids? Also, how could you possibly give me an approximate price break down for each fluid with the total cost for each fluid? I just want to know around how much I will be spending for just fluids. Thanks.

I'm not sure about how much that shop might charge for fluids but i found it cheaper to bring my own stuff -

also - i'm running Royal Purple 10w-30 on my daily driver, and it works great - and i also suggest Redline's 50/50 coolant (already mixed) -

RP right now is running - ~$7.50 a qt. and redline a qt. is ~$10. I'm not too sure about trans fluid but my RP was about ~$9 i think a qt.

hope this helped

I already had the service done this morning and just decided to have the shop use their own fluids since I didn't want to spend a ton of extra money and wasn't exactly sure how much of each fluid I would need. Also, the parts store I went to before didn't have RP and was out of some of the fluids. The shop used Castrol 5w-20 oil, but not sure which one. The car runs much better now. I will change to better brands like RP and Redline when I need my next change. I will probably get Redline 5w-30 oil at my next change. The owner of the shop was very honest and he even owns an 04 AT Rx8 himself, which he had previously turbo'd, but just sold it. I trust that everything was done right since he did all the work.

Do you guys read all of the posts?
I was going to chime in about the fact you took it to Rick. My video card bricked my pc for the last couple of days so it made surfing a pain in the rear. Oh well.

Good to hear that she runs better.

Yeah he still has the car, '04 Ti Gray AT, but he sold the Greddy Turbo. He and I were chatting and he said that he let a customer who owned an Turbo'd AT FD drive it. The guy said the 8 was faster. I think he said he sold it because he had planned on getting rid of the car, but after he sold the turbo, he still wanted to keep it. Can you believe he said he was averaging 27 mpg highway with the turbo?

All in all I am glad I went to Rick's. He is a very informed guy who cares about his customers. He was very honest and if I add the cost of my Optima red top to the total of the work he did, it is still about half of what the dealer would charge for just the service. The dealer probably would do something wrong anyway. I will now be going to Rick's to get all my services done. I am one very happy customer!

Our cars take 12 quarts of transmission fluid and 5 quarts of oil????

That seems like a lot for a 1.3....

12 qts for a full flush.
I let my oil drain for a while when I change it.
