Question Help on modifications to 2007 Rx-8.

I just bought a new rx-8 and chose an automatic transmission due to the wife not wanting to drive a standard.( next car will be a manual) I want to gain at least 16 horsepower. What are some mods and the brands that work well with rx-8s and automatics. thanks

You can search. There's too many threads in this section for increasing HP in an AT 8. There's a couple below this one with information.

16 horsepower was a minimum, looking at a cold air intake and exhaust to start,
is there any truth to sucking water into engine with a cold air intake, and when i mod the exhaust is it going to sound like a lawn mower? thanks

1/No, it's a myth.
2/No it's not too bad, but many intakes will go straight past "lawn mower" to "weedwacker"!!

they're pretty popular here with all the curves and small mountains. there are alot of good driving roads here.

I've recently been told that the HKS intake gives a decent gain. Not much of a gain, but some. From what I've read most of the intakes only add sound, and some have even been found to take away power. Mazda did a really good job on optimizing the intake and exhaust for this engine, it seems.

As far as exhausts go, most are for sound as well. I have the Mazdaspeed dual muffler exhaust, and I love the sound. It MAY have added a little bit of power, but that may be more due to the placebo affect than anything.

I believe Phil gained about 20hp with the Interceptor X. It is a piggy back ECU. Most likely it will give you a constant CEL, but you can get a scan tool to check that to make sure it is the "expected" code. Some people like having a piggyback, others don't want to deal with them. Cobb is supposed to be coming out with a tool that will allow you to reflash the stock ECU with a more powerful tune, but I haven't heard whether that is going to work on automatics or not.

The only way to really add significant power to an 8 is FI. Or drop in a 3 rotor I actually did that with my 8 in Forza2 - it is a lot of fun

I have upgraded my rear gear to 4.77 (from 4.44). I have a 4AT, so my experience may not directly compare to what yours would be with the 6AT. But it has definitely made a difference in revving response and acceleration. Not a huge difference, but a noticeable difference. My top speed will be lower, but I may never get the car going that fast anyway. From what I understand the automatics are electronically limited to 125 mph, so I don't think the lower gear will affect the top speed. If you do a lot of highway miles, your gas mileage will be slightly lower. I think my city mileage has actually improved a bit. I can use 4th gear a bit more without it bogging down the engine too much.

Intake - HKS suction
Exhaust - I'm gonna go on a limb here and say you're probably gonna want a quieter exhaust tone so you might wanna look at racing beats dual exhaust.

for power - like MDW1000 said, the Int-x has been a popular choice for a ems for the fact it gives you control over fuel and air management.

for response - maybe an upgraded pulley set up.

No ems - good exhaust, either RP Supercat or midpipe (which maybe too loud and may cause a CEL in some cases), pulleys, and revi8 Intake from racing beat.

oh yeah and uhhh...as far as the 212hp thing...i'll leave the search button to your disposal

lol, I will tell u, that if u can't find an HKS intake, get a typhoon v.2 and put foils to cover it up and stuff, and get another pipe or something and make sure that the intake gets fresh air delivered to it from where the vfad is

works equally good, if not better, cus I never really used the HKS, but my car is good with it

as for exhaust, anything is fine.......I use espelir just cause........and its not that loud, my intake is like a jet taking off

pulley setup is good, if ur looking for good one for cheap, Agency power is a good choice, if u do have money and want the most out, get the UR AND agency, but it might make ur AC a bit worse, but what the hell, our ACs are freezer cold anyways

EMS wise, get the INT-X, I know its expensive, but for what its worth, its probably the best, cus every other ones can't fool our ecus for more than a month

as for 212 hp, its true, we do have 212 hp, but thats at the freaking crank
+ our whp is lower than a 212 hp MT becaush we lose a bit more power to the wheel by the slushbox(which I'm taking out this weekend and taking a look inside)

I do have to disagree with this one. There are aftermarket exhausts that are significantly lighter than the stock exhaust.

You, my man, need to get some facts straight - I never suggested switching the ecus, if any thing I would have put in cap letters do not switch ecus. This young man took it on himself to prove me wrong about differences in the two. I was not going to have any thing else to do with him but after reading some of his off the wall stuff I was afraid that he might injure himself or others and surly hurt his or others 8s. I figured that I would just be very careful of what I say. I do see the ha ha at the end of your post but just wanted to be sure you understand the facts.

trust me phil - i got you.

i knew what you meant as well as a couple of others who read your post - i just quoted it as the 'phil suggestion' because i thought it was funny that tajabaho took your statement as a true suggestion - when he came back and posted that he attempted that i couldn't stop laughing because right as i finished reading your post - i said to myself 'i know someone is gonna try this when they get home' haha...evidently i'm the next ms. cleo

way to go tajabaho!
