Porting a 4 Port

Ok ive not sure if this is worth the money or not. This is basically a quesiton. Does anyone think u can get major gains for a port job on the 4 port. Im thinking u could see some really impressive gains but idk and I want other people opionions first before I really do something crazy. I know 4 ports are used all around the world like AU, Europe, and I believe the Type-E rx-8 is a 4 port also, and the Type-S is the the 6 port in japan. Im sure some people have done this before just curious on what people on this forum think of it.

You might want to read this thread. https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-specific-performance-mods-97/heres-why-engine-has-less-power-potential-than-6mt-20148/
If you have the money to spend on a project like this you might as well get a 6-speed.

After reading RG post and I hope he repost with some insight for me, with a port job and FI, think the 4 port could hit say 300+ if we used the new mazsport turbo. (I know its not out yet and this is just here say). Thing is Ive done to much to my car to just trade it in, for a 6 port so im trying to get input here if porting and FI is going to see some impressive gains.

Expo you ruined my day! lol

Makes sence though that our 4 port won't get as powerful a gain as the 6 ports. I just dont like how some companies are even trying to make modifications for it. Well one day who knows.. lol.. just be harder now since I've read that the new A/T's are going to have the 6 ports also.

Well I am going to find out in Dec. what porting will gain. The new car is on order and I cant survive on one car right now.

I will say this. the exhaust ports on the 6/4 ports are too constrictive from the factory. So right now the the work will be aimed in that area. Not sure yet what the exhaust port timing will be.

In a NA application opening the intake ports will hurt the low end tourqe. So those will be seeing a possible later closing timing. The wont hurt trh low tourqe much, but will help the upper end power. not sure what the new duration will be.

The stock intake ports flow fairly well already, just need to be radiused a little to smooth out the flow.

I'm not sure how I missed this thread until now.

Do NOT open the intake ports any earlier!!!!!!! You will be buying a new engine after the first time you crank it over! Those ports open as early as they can and it's even earlier than the largest streetports on the 13B engines. If you do, the corner seals will fall into the ports and you'll lose an engine. Please do not do it. Don't try it to see what will happen. Just forget about the idea altogether!

You can close the intake ports a little bit later. This will help. While I have written that the 6 port engine has more potential than the 4 port engines, it doesn't mean they don't have potential too. They do. Even the 4 port engine makes a little bit more than the last 13B did on it's own and I've seen stock port 13B's boosted to over 600 hp. It's got potential to get power but it needs to be in the form of forced induction. I seriously doubt porting it and leaving it naturally aspirated will get you to even what the 6 port engines have stock. In fact I know it won't. Yes you can get more power than it has now. There's no question. Don't fall into the trap that bigger is better. The only reason the 6 port system works so well over the 4 port engine is because it revs higher. It can use the extra port area and timing. Keep the rpm range where it is now and boost it. You'll be surprised what this engine is capable of under a little pressure!

After doing some reaserch with Glen (one of Yaws engine builders), the decision was made to look at another porting route with the Intake ports.

Blitz already has a roots supercharger for the 4 port, too.

But I'm still looking forward to Hymee's the most. I'm interested in Pettit's results mostly for knowledge.
