RX8 Automatic owners..

Is it me or is the acceleration really really slow? I can floor the car with or without DSC and it feels like it doesn't move until it hits 20MPH. Then it rockets faster. Tires don't even mirc. I tried with the triptronic thing and same ****. Is it me or are all AT like this?

It's not just you...it seems like all AT's are like that. Mine was the same. Floor it, wait 2-3 secs, reach ~20mph, then the accelration kicks in. Thats's why I traded it in for the MT.

My auto 8 gets rolling good around 10MPH since I have the CZ unit tuned for my car. Best bang for the buck to help the auto 8 gain more HP than stock. I'm a happy camper. :D

Acceleration is not as much as in some sports cars, but I would hardly call it slow. It's still faster than most cars on the road. I guess it depends on how you drive. I never floor it when leaving a stop light.

There are plenty of people this forum who prefer the MT, because it has more power. If speed is your thing, then that's the car for you.

And now to define the AT...(I'm not trying to start a flame war, really):

Personallly, I would never give up my AT for an MT. The paddle shifters are awesome, and you'll be in more control of the car, because you're hands will always be on the wheel. The other day I was driving an MT through mountain roads, and I couldn't go nearly as fast, because I was shifting all of the time. The AT is great in the mountains, because you can reallly concentrate on your driving rather than shifting.

So, I say just enjoy your AT. It has some strengths that the MT doesn't have, even if it has less power. If power was everyting, then nobody would own an RX-8.

I have to say I have the AT and recently I got a chance to drive Richard Pauls MT and going through the mountains in that car was awesome! The MT was so much more fun to drive. He did have the RP shifter installed which made the drive even better. For mountain/twisty driving on the AT in my opinion the paddles are too hard to use when cornering and downshifting/upshifting. They are only useful when driving in a straight/semi straight line.

Don't get me wrong I love my AT and since it takes me almost 1hr 1/2 to drive 14miles to work I'll take it over the MT. If I lived away from traffic though, I would trade this in for a MT in a second.

Hopefully the Axial Flow Supercharger will come out soon to give us some needed power.

i gave up my auto and got an 05 WRX, much more fun and i can have a factory turbo! at least i can put some cash into the car and get good gains now. letting my wife choose an automatic RX8 was a big waste of time for me. i missed the thrill of using a stick shift!

Just out of curiosity, didn't you test drive this car before you bought it? I was fully aware of what it could or couldn't do before signing those papers.

Anything we can do about the slow acceleration? Not much at the moment. Intake/exhaust do little or nothing. CZ unit sounds promissing but challenging to set up and tweak.

Do I love my AT? Yes, it's not all about straight line speed. I wish people would stop buying the RX8 (in either trim) if they are so concerned about stop light drags and whatnot.

Well I dyno'd my stock AT car (no DCS and running on 16" stock rims, I think I was on the P flash if the dealership did what they said they did) the same day a about 7 other manuals did and I was only pushing about 135rwhp while they were getting between 180-204rwhp. I was a little disappointed until I placed higher in an autocross than a manual RX8 did. I do wish the car had more get up and go. I may have placed even higher if it would accelerate just a tad bit faster.

you mean to tell me we are loosing 31.5% to the wheels from the already lowered 197 HP
with a 15% loss to the wheels we should push 167 WHP
with a 23 % loss the max the 6 speed is lossing we push 152 WHP

not if we don't make 197hp. The general consensus is that the 6spd makes 220 engine hp (down ~9% from the Mazda estimate :p ). The auto, if it were down the same percentage, would only make 180 engine horsepower. At which point 135 rwhp equates to about 25% driveline loss (still too high, imo). But rolling drum dynos are not exactly the most accurate measuring devices in the world either.

Question

whenson417:

2 questons for you.

One: what gear did you dyno your 8 in?

Two: did you disconnect your speed sensors on the back wheels?

A bunch of 8's from NH and MA are getting together this weekend to dyno our 8's and wanted to know.

Hmm....torque converters suck up a lot of torque....the rotary doesn't have much torque to begin with. That 135hp seems a little low though, but could be right.....
