$3,000 Rebate Vs. Reliability
Just saw where Mazda is offering a $3,000 cash back incentive on a new 2008 RX-8. this is very tempting, but i just cant convince myself that the RX-8 isnt a piece of junk, that it wont break down on me, wont cause me all kinds of problems, and wont be nothing but headache after headache for me.
what to do, what to do........

You wake up eat your sub-par breakfast drive in your Honda Civic to your entry level dead end job get back in your Honda Civic and drive home and fall asleep while cuddling with a picture of an RX-8. You then start dreaming of what your life would be if you actually grew some ***** and tried things out on your own rather then asking people on the internet to make your decisions for you.

How long are you planning on keeping the car? Forever? Several years?
Your 2008 will last just fine until at least 60K, if you maintain it as per schedule and rev the engine regularly.
My 2005 with regular maintenance has made it to 62K with zero major issues, performing scheduled maintenance. Compression at 56K was excellent. Minor issues, most annoying: had airbag TSB done (already fixed in yours), front camber cams seized (alignment never touched them in 2.5 years, solution, don't go to a deadbeat dealership).
No transmission or engine issues. I don't powershift, don't launch hard, don't force gears, don't rev the engine cold.
The 2008 with all the fixes and PCM improvements applied from the factory--I don't see why it wouldn't last 60K. It'll probably get to 90K just fine too.

I maybe he's a troll maybe not. I love the RX-8 and would own one if it weren't for a few things:
1) I'm not sure I can trust it for really long term reliability. I'm confident that it's a pretty solid 100k mile car when taken care of. I'm just not sure it's a solid 200k mile car. My IS300 has 143k miles on it, zero issues, no check engine lights, etc... and even tows 2000lbs worth of jet skis around.
2) Fuel economy isn't very good, but neither is my IS300. (One of my biggest complaints with my car)
3) Climate control system isn't automatic. I like to set the temp and forget it. Sounds minor yes... but I find the temp sliders annoying.

The gas consumption is really crappy, though. It's definitely a bad car for those of you who would drive it long distances.

well all i can say is go drive one and u'll forget the problems.
and all cars have their problems, even lexus. the rotary remember is
a unique engine and needs love and care, ie rev it lol. all other cars
bore me in design/looks compared to the rx8 too. great sound system, engine/bose lol.
or don't bother and buy a 350z or a civic.

well, my major concern is that i just dont want headaches with cars. there isnt anything worse than having car troubles, and repairs are expensive as you know what anymore.
i suffered through a horrible situation several years ago with a used corvette, and ended up selling it on Ebay. what a relief it was to get rid of that piece of junk, and all the headaches i had during the one year i owned it. and i would assume i wouldnt keep this RX-8 much more than 3-4 years, and probably just drive it no more than half the time. which means after the 3-4 year period it would have no more than 50,000 miles on it.
from what i have surmised about a new 2008 RX-8, i assume the following:
1) let them warm up before pushing them.
2) flooding issues have been resolved.
3) i've read on websites where a handful of RX-8 owners had problems. thats a handful out of the thousands that have no problems.
4) the engine SHOULD make it to 100,000, but who knows after that?
5) oil might need to be added every 1,000 miles or so.
6) i have the three year warranty for piece of mind so i can sleep at night.
thoughts RX-8 aficianados?

1. Applies to all cars, all engines, not just Rotary
2. Pretty much, almost 3 yrs of ownership never had a flood, even b4 the update flash
3. of course, ppl will bitch only when they run into problems
4. of course, but **** can happen, applies to all car, all companies
5. depends on ur driving style
6. of course.

i bought mine with prexisting problems and had my car die at like 76k, but i have been in love with the car since i first drove it. the engine might make it....and it might not either way all you can do is deal with it. If you dont like taking care of a high performance car or dealing with problems that always come up with somthing that goes fast i agree with the others, go buy an economy car and enjoy good gas milage and watching all the guys with sports car fly by with big *** grins on there faces.....or join the crowd and haul ***...just my opinion i could be wrong

RX-8 has $20/ea spark plugs, add oil in between, require brake fluid changes every 30K, brake rotors are way more expensive than econobox rotors, just regular maintenance is more expensive due to the sporty nature of the car.
