Dont try to force it, I tried to force mine, it never moved.
Try to twist it in both ways, like twist it hard in counter-clockwise, then twist it a bit back to clockwise direction. I got mine off like that. Didnt even break anything. I was using Scott's tool to remove mine. I shown it to my father, he told me that I can get shops to weld something like that maybe for like 50-100 bux , so u can buy a new cap, show it to those welding shops the cap, and ask them to make u a tool to open it.
if u broke some tabs on the cap, u better replace it with a new one.

The official tool from Mazda cost 260 bux I think.
Is it worth it or not? I dont really think so.
Go fab a tool at ur local welder. Im sure they can do one for you at probably 1/2 price or less. (Im planning to do that soon)

just replaced the fuel pump / filter tonight, nearly gave up and gave it one more shot. It is a pain in the **** but when it's appart you'll appreciate why this cover is meant to be tight. I used a flat screw driver and disregarded the two black clips 180 deg appart. Without nothing but a flat head and a small hammer tap on the extruding fins around the top of the lid or cover of the actual pump. it is r/h threaded to the fuel tank and has two things making it tight, one really. The o-ring covering the main tank, the other which is a spring not supplied with a new tank.
I would have created a DIY thread on the site but had to get it going to drive for the morning. and it had already pissed me off enough. Don't swing too hard with the hammer if you haven't taken your other half of the seat off too. just point the screw driver in a position where you can get the best purchase on them little extruding fins and understand it will be tight until it's been undone about 60 deg. about 270 deg and the thing will come loose.....
when the lid is off, remove one electrical clip and a fuel line (One more of those pain in the **** plastic hose clamps) and then she'll be out.
Some more work to get some parts from the old one to the new one, which is where I apologise for no photos. and a very vaugue(sp*) description.
However if I can say don't take the initial hose off untill the pump body before you have removed the lid described above unless you want to spray your interior with 95 octane!!! try not to smoke cigarettes at this point too. I would put this in the same pain in the **** catagory as the first time I tried to remove my air filter box.
Good luck!!
