[CEL] Check Engine Light - Code P2079
"Jon316G" suggested that I should post a new thread instead of hijacking somebody else's thread with CEL... (I thought it would be nicer to keep the thread lesser)
Though I'm a new user here, I'm certainly not new to forum and stuff, I've did a search b4 opening up this thread.
I've recently bought a used 2004 RX-8. All stock and no mods at all to the car. Milage is at 33K, while the original battery has been replaced (before I bought it from a dealership - not mazda) and the engine has been sent back for Mazda recall (previous owners).
After getting the car, as it is still in Warranty, I've sent the car to be inspected by a nearby Mazda dealership.
Here's my first encounter:
My CEL came up the first time and i've gone back to the Mazda dealership to have it inspected. They documented the error code is P2079, which I found in the forum saying that the engine is running too rich and check A/F feedback system (what does it mean?). They (the dealership) tested the engine, and cant seem to find any problem with it. So they did a reset and and drove home.
2 days later, the CEL comes back up again. I believe it's due to the same error. Any idea y is this happening?
I suspect that it's becuz the inside condition of the car is terribly hot (due to the black green exterior). Could it be due to overheat interior?
On my previous service with the dealership, they have also diagnosed that the HVAC control unit has some problem and has order a new replacement for it, which I'll be bringing my car to them on Monday (today)... The other thing is that, they claimed to have re-wired the car due to the frequent airbag indicator which pops up and off at times.. Both problem seem to be fixed (or going to be fixed)
But the CEL is still on, any idea? (if it's related to the HVAC control unit?)
Thanks.
I've attached a file with the report generated by the Mazda Dealership that I went.

P.S The Color of the car is Dark Green close to black, which I hate And how do you guys kept the interior not getting to the "frying hot" stage?

Its just so that if anyone searches for P2079, they don't start reading about something that doesn't appear to be what they are looking for and your discussion is "lost" inside another thread.
I'll post my reply here to keep it going:
vX-2:
Welcome to the forum!
FYI... even though this thread is labeled "CEL", its for a different issue (most likely).
So next time please start a new thread.
Could you tell us more about your car like mileage and any aftermarket modifications (intake, exhaust, etc).
I'm guessing you meant P2097, not P2079. If that's the case, it could be a few problems.

- Front or rear O2 sensor
- IAT (intake air temp) sensor
- Exhaust leak
- Fuel pump

But definitely is P2079 not 2097... Sighz...
I've sent my car to the nearby mazda dealership this morning.... I hope they don't come out with that stupid excuse again!

I have had that code come up before on my RX8 P2079 check your wiring for your ignition coils make sure they are not spliced and free of directed contact of heat also they recommend we change our ignition coils after 40,000 miles you are coming up on that. If that does not work check your O2 sensors make sure they are not on direct heat also. Last thing check all your connections you won't believe how much shops you trust to do your work will forget or install your stuff incorrectly. Hope this helps good luck.

They have just called me and this time around, they found it's the O2 sensor to be at fault... I've also just asked them to have a look at the famous "clutch braket" because it started squeking at me this morning (like yelping for attention). But, when I asked them to have a look into it, they were like, "clutch braket"?? Specifically, what r you concerned, sir? I'm guessing I was too specific, so I told them the clutch gave me a squeking sound this morning when I press on the clutch pedal. The service advisor said, 'ok, will do'

Yeah... I saw in this thread the service invoice said P2079.
I was looking through the shop manual and couldn't find P2079, that's why I thought you meant P2097.
Glad to hear that they are suspecting the O2 sensor... lets just hope that takes care of it.
And you really do need to be simple with the dealerships.
Its best to print out documents/TSBs and bring it to them!
Good luck and keep us posted!

The system needs oxygen feedback from your O2 sensors to generate the correct A/F value. if the O2 sensor has a problem, this CEL might shown. Yeah there is a CEL for the O2 Sensor, but the sad thing is that the O2 sensor could be bad but still nothing throwing any codes for it. Just Like ur dealership said.
for the HVAC, yep, its a known problem. hot air blows cold and cold air blows hot out. They have to replace your HVAC controls. no other choice. Mine was replaced once about a year something ago, lets see how long it will last.
Clutch bracket, most dealership dunno anything about it(nor do they care), so unless it breaks off its pretty hard to get them to replace it. you better hope that when it breaks, you're not driving 70 mph on the interstate. you can get a better part from either CRH/BHR or Mazsports.

what if it was a P2097 and the invoice was just a typo? What is a P2097? my car just popped that code along with a P0335 and a P0172 just before that. the car started to run like crap so it could make since that it could be an O2 sensor being how I am now at 101117 miles on the car. I hope it isn't the coils, and I know it isn't the plugs as they were changed yesterday.

yeah i got that code for awhile, but i think it was juss cuz of aftermarket intake, and i juss cleaned the sensor and it was fine...hopefully u juss have a sensor issue.
#17
oh wait. i got 2097...so if u really got 2079 an its not a typo, disregard my previous comment. lol. good luck with finding that problem, CELs get annoying real fast.
