04 RX8 AT Power Loss while Driving for 6 HRS
Hey All
Just moved to Tallahassee to attend FSU in the fall of this year; On the drive up on Friday the car was fine for the most part of my 6 hour journey from home to my new apartment. I stopped in gainsville, temperature was around 105 according to the car thermometer. I parked the car, ate lunch with soem buddies and got back on the highway around 2:30 in the afternoon, EST. I got onto I-10, which is about another 100 miles until you get to Tallahassee from gville the temperate gauge red 107...108...109...110...and finally stayed at around 111; it was rediciously hot apparently that day. Well while driving on I-10, which is quite hilly which pretty steep grades the car was on cruise control at 76-79 and it would have to down shift to 3rd gear (4spd at on my 04) in order to get up the hills. It was pretty annoying but i didn't think much of it, I thought it was kind of weird it needed to down shift just to maintain speed though. Well as the temperature maintained at around 110-111 for the duration of the drive, about half way through my car started to lose power. It would down shift in cruise control and attempt to maintain speed, but end up losing 10-15mph per incline, depending on grade-were not talking about mountains here either. It would then down shift again to 2nd gear, raising the rpm close to red line. I thought at first the cruise control was messed up or something but after taking it out of cruise control it was continuing to lose speed while climbing hills, even if I pushed the gas petal to the floor and manually down shifted to 2nd gear and red lined the car it would continue to lose speed.
I drove at 55mph the rest of the way, since at the time it was only another 30-40mins and brought it to the Mazda dealership here in tally, gem mazda. They did a full set of diagnostics, compression, and even took it for a 30 mile drive and were unable to duplicate any symptoms what so ever.
I have to drive home in about 3 weeks, i am worried about the car completely breaking down. Is it because of the heat? what? I dont know, and neither do they apparently.
