06 rx8 engine stalling and no acceleration
Wassup everyone, I am Scottie my bad if I posted in the wrong thread. My girlfriend has an Automatic 2006 RX-8, not sure what model/package. Let me give you guys a background about the car. It is daily driven in Las Vegas, NV so the temperature gets extremely hot and cold depending on the season. The initial problem occurred after coming back from Christmas vacation (hence the car has not been started or run for a few weeks). Although it was fine for a few months. The first problem was that the car had difficulty starting but after a few tries it would eventually start. One day while driving with the A/C on the engine shut off in the middle of the road after coming to a complete stop. Had the car towed to the dealer and they said there was an engine flooding so they fixed it for that. After that the car ran okay with no problems until the spring/summer season started to come in and the temperature rise. Okay long story short now, at times the car will not accelerate at all. It struggles to maintain speed in the highway even when flooring it. This is usually a sure sign that if I come to a complete stop the car will stall and die out. My gf took the car to the dealer again and after they ran diagnostic (which cost about $200) they didn't find any problems so they told her she needs to change her breaks, spark plugs, coils, pretty much a tune up. We don't have the money for all of that right now and don't want to do all of that if it is not really the problem. So now we are stuck with a rx8 that does not accelerate normally and occasionally stalls out and shut down....
Any ideas or advice on what to do would be appreciated. Or if you guys need more info about the car let me know.

Lol, the regular stealership procedure...
Definitely sign of loss power, can't believe the stealership can't find out the issue..... ever change spark plugs, coil, or weird yet?

nah not yet...I want to do all those things myself but the gf don't trust me or some bullshit haha...I mean if its not hard to do than I can do it myself, I've done it with Toyotas and Hondas but I don't know anything about rotory motors and don't wanan **** **** up more

How many miles are on the car? The spark plugs definitely need to be done every 37K miles. If you're in Vegas heat, the wires and coils might be suspect as well. You can buy all those parts online for cheaper and have the dealer install them if you are uncomfortable working on the car. The acceleration problem might be a clogged catalytic converter, which is a result of unburnt fuel going into it. (i.e. flooding, bad plugs letting too much unburnt fuel into the cat..etc.) I think you should start with the plugs wires and coils and then have the dealership test the catalytic converter. Its covered under a federal 70,000 mile warranty. Hope this helps!

Check out the DIY section, they teach you how to replace those.
Coil and plugs are recommended to replace around 20-30k miles...
Most people would replace those first (if needed, according to mileage) if the problem involve stalling and power loss.
I would recommend to replace those first and go from there...
Oh, yeah, and don't go back to that stealership again....

The car is about 60k miles...yeah the coil, plugs, and wires will be the 1st thing to replace. Funny thing, the dealership said something about the mounting needs to be replaced and estimated like $500 bucks also something with the coolent b/c the coolent light came on...

same thing my 05 did at 53k miles, replaced the coils and spark plugs, worked great another 9k miles til the engine crapped out. if it still doesnt run right after the coils/plugs have the dealer run a compression test, if it fails its free and all under warranty

I have an 2004 mt. My car stalls in acceleration around 3k rpms then picks back up normally about 3500k and then stalles again around 4k Rpms and does this repeadiatly until 7000 rpms where its stops accelerating. Is this coils, plugs? or is it more of a CAT converter issue? Thanx for the help.

My 2005 AT is having the EXACTLY the same problems, no acceleration power and stalling in stop / go traffic in hot weather. Felt like flooding. Mazda Dealer did **** and charged an arm and a leg. What happened to their repair motto "Fix it right the first time"? Useless pr*cks. Then a week ago it stalled in the middle of traffic, but fortunately right near a regular (competent) mechanic, who checked the plugs & coils (AOK) and he said the onboard computer log showed "cylinder 2 misfire" but with no date. Useful, eh? What cylinder? In the end, he couldn't figure out why it was stalling. Then it stalled again yesterday at a stop sign, with a**holes piling up behind me honking impatiently even though I put on the hazard flashers. I'm sick of the whole thing. Do I sell it or junk it?

1. Go to dealer (Brossard Mazda has been good to me) complain of lack of power, ask for compression test
2. After results of said compression test come back below spec, have engine replaced under the 8 year warranty
3. Get new coils and spark plugs
4. Be happy for another 50,000 km then replace the coils again

Last time Fairview Mazda de-carbonized but didn't do compression test. I'll take your advice and go to Brossard. I bought the car used from Gatineau Mazda but can't find the receipt. I hope the car still would qualify for the engine replacement under warranty, if it needs replacing.

My 04 did the same thing, loss of power, stalling, oil light, full oil. Changed everything. Advice...take for a compression test. 148,000 miles, just changed motor...runs like a top! Thought it would be something easy at first...nickeled & dimed me trying to figure it out...save some time & do the test first! Good luck!

early 04 have oil level sensor issues, it will trigger the light on but the oil is actually fine. to solve it, you either replace the sensor with a newer 05+ used sensor, a brand new sensor, or just unplug the connector and check your oil more often.
