My 07 rx8
I was driving home from work and 5th gear would not engage easily. If felt like metal on metal when it finally popped into gear. Then going from 5 the neutral took both hands to pull the shifter to neutral. 1-4 & 6 are fine. Took it back to carmax who sent me to aamco who said it was a synchronizer. Now they are telling me that the main input bearing was also bad and the transmission needs to be replaced.

What do you guys think?
(thank god for car warranties!)

I think you're getting a new transmission, and you should find the guy who sold you your car, and give him a big hug. Maybe stuff a $20 in his pocket.

But yeah, trans issues are known to happen every now and again.
Make sure you aren't abusing the transmission (one guy complained recently that his constant speed shifting killed his many many mile 5 speed RX-8 transmission), or using the wrong fluid when you have it changed.

Now the transmission shop is telling me it will take weeks to get a replacement tranny.

When you buy used it can happen......some people abuse their cars and it makes for bad publicity. If I buy used I get a warranty.
