FL 2005 tail lights work, brake lights don't

Hey all,
I just got a 2005 rx8 a few weeks ago & i'm loving it. But today I've noticed that my tail lights work, brake lights don't. I've tested all the lights, except the 3rd tail light & they work. Only having an issue when hitting the break, no lights come on. Checked the STOP fuse under the hood, it's fine. I'm thinking it's the break light switch on the pedal. Before I start playing with it any suggestions on how to test it or a guide on how to replace it?

Thanks!

Bryan

Try replacing the bulb because there is 2 different filaments inside, one for the tail light and one for the brake light, and if only the brake light filament is broken then the tail light will still work.

I just had the same issue in a hyundai that I own and what it is is a small plastic box with a plastic switch thingy (for lack of a better word) that is faulty. Its a $5-$10 part. Its located right underneath the brake pedal, its maybe 4" long anf 2" high and an 1" thick rectangular shape with a single switchy plunger thing that gets pushed in when you apply your brakes and that is what turns your brake lights on and when the brake pedal is let go the switchy plunger thing also releases and turns the brake lights off. sorry for my horrid description but you can prolly goggle some of the info I gave ya and find out what its really called but Id think thats your problem from what you posted. Its super cheap and easy to install and I dont think you can get them at pep boys, at least I couldnt. I had to go the Hyundai but mine was only $5

I didnt realize you mentioned it. to replace it you just unsnap the wiring harness to it and then theres a small nut maybe 1/4" but not sure. Just unscrew it off and then screw in the new one and reconnect the wiring harness. As far as checking if its bad I have no idea but from your post Id say its def bad.

I"m having a weird issue with my taillights... decided to swap all of the stock bulbs to LED bulbs (wasn't aware of needed resistors) after about 24 hours of having the bulbs switched back to stock bulbs... I noticed my lower tail lights work.. but the lower brake lights do not work.... only the third brake light... I did a test and put my hazard lights on to see if there was a fuse issue or something, but now my third brake light isn't turning off unless I unplug the negative battery cable... Is this a fuse or brake light switch issue? and if it is, how do I know which it could be... anyone have pics of what their brake light switch looks like installed? Thanks!

Hazards & Turn Signals run off a different fused system than your Driving Lights / Brake Lights so that will not help with testing.

Is the 3rd brake light on with the key out of the ignition or just ignition on? Could be your switch, but its weird your getting power to the 3rd brake light and not the other 2, Check bulbs for blown filament, if good your likely getting a short in the trunk to hatch wiring harness where it opens and closes check there.

This is a link to the other thread.

I need to tie these threads together. To see about a resolution.
I was hoping to see an answer somewhere here on the RX8CLUB. So far...

This doesn't look good.
