20B benefits

I was hoping someone can tell me if there were any benefits to the 20B (or more specifically 3 rotor rotary engines) other than the increased displacements. Namely because now you have a higher over lap of the power cycle does the engine run smoother?

Also I noticed that on some of the race version rotary engines Mazda used 3 spark plugs to increase fuel mileage, why was this not put in the RX8?

Thanks for the help and info

I remember reading back when the rx8 just came out that there was going to be a high performance version of the engine in some cars with the 3 spark plugs per housing, that obviously never happened though.

In theory yes a 20B will run smoother, but most people don't tune them for that. I'd still love to see a high performance rx8 with a factory installed 3-rotor engine tho.

here's a 20b benefit: more horsepower and torque.

cause most women dont know anything about cars, especially rotary engines. and most of the time, they dont care. they pretty much only care about the look of the car.

What is needed to do the swap, obviously intake/exhaust manifold, another set of coils, plugs, wires. Does it fit right in there or is there cutting involved in getting it in? Can our trannys support the added power or is that another upgrade needed? And can the ecu handle it? I would think the ecu would be the weakest link. IDK anyone care to chime in?

He has to Cut the crossmember in order to fit the engine.

Once cut, you will never be able to go back.

You have to start with history book, cuz it tells you a lot of the concepts and tech data.

Well I've been reading everything I can find my hands on, on the internet. Serivce manuals, histories, some tech stuff, but the actual design and engineering work is not something most companies let go to easily. I'd like to get the SAE papers, but will have to wait and see about those. Please don't get me wrong, I'm an engineer. And would like to see the what's and why's to the mazda style rotary. Also would like to learn more about the DKM 54.

Has Racecar Engineering wrote an article on the wankel design?

Thanks
Rip

Basically, take a single rotor rotary, put the spark plugs inside the rotor (three plugs, one per rotor face), and have the whole engine spin around the eccentric shaft, that is held stationary.

It's a very neat design in that it only involves pure rotation, so no counterweights are needed. However it requires a complete engine teardown to reach the spark plugs, and knowing how often a rotary needs to have its plugs replaced, a DKM powered car would need an engine teardown every 20000 - 30000 miles or so

That's why the KKM design was created
