Angry 2nd gear grinds when downshifting

So recently my 05 rx8 has started grinding when i downshift from 3rd to 2nd at anything above 30mph no matter what the rpm is when i go to shift..it does not grind at all when up shifting from 1st to 2nd, every car I've ever owned grinds when up shifting when the syncros go out, never when downshifting..what does this mean? i use to be able to drop it to 2nd even at 45 mph with no grinding. I guess this is something to do with the syncros. will this be covered under warranty? or would they consider that non normal driving tactics or whatever the dealer likes to call it..

^G3TR3DDY2GR3DDY had the same problem. His syncros were replaced by the dealer and it was fixed. Although depending on the dealer, it may or may not be covered under warranty. They sometimes try to say that it was abused, or if you have the short shifter they may try to say that had something to do with it...

Wow! i about to start the thread.

How much to replace without warranty?
Hope I could claim it. I don't have any mod on my tranny.

+1 I hate Mazda dealer.
Never had any good experience with them.

damnit i guess im going to take it in and see what they say... i dont have any mods to the car other then RB gauge pod, RB catback, and the mazmart water pump and rad. my warrenty runs out very soon since its an 05.. they better fix this ****, if they dont im gonna pitch one hell of a fit. id be looking at like 2k to do the job if the warrenty dosent cover it. the thing im worried about is its not normal to downshift into second above 35mph so when they test drive it to find the problem they might say that thats abuse.

I hate to revive this but I guess that's better than starting a new one. Does anyone actually know how much this costs to have done? I know 13b said it looked like 2k but does anyone know for sure? Also, if its just starting (I only have issues if I'm going closer to 35) does it hurt to push this off (assuming I try to make it happen as little as possible of course)?

Does it always do it or only when the car is hot? Have you had issues with any other gears when the car is warm?

If so your issue may not be the synchros but the master/slave cylinders.

If not, find out how much it costs then call mazmart and ask how much for a remanufactured transmission swap. My bet is that it's cheaper to swap than it is to rebuild.

It is only 3rd to 2nd gear. I only know that it does when the car is hot, I try not to go abouve 3000 rpm until its hot.

That sounds expensive but it doesn't really surprise me.

Thanks for the info!

It will cost almost as much to fully rebuild one properly as a new one, though there are plenty of people that will try to rape you on a new replacement. A good used one is your best value option, though there is always a risk with used ..

Update: I took it to the dealership today and he said he thought it was synchros and said it would be 20 hrs of work. So that looks like a lot of money. He recommended that I look to find a used one so that's probably what I'll do. He also said that if it's a full rebuild/ different trans I might as well drive on it until I can't take it anymore.

More detail, if I shift into 2nd (from 3rd) at 35 mph there is a bit of a clunk but that's it. At 38 it grinds but goes in and I didn't try any higher than that.

Sorry for posting nothing then editing immediately. I'm on mobile and the keyboard disappeared and I hit post.

First replace the gear oil. Sometimes that's all it takes to get a transmission shifting properly, and it's a lot cheaper than replacing the transmission.

Should have included, I already did. It helped a bit and it made every other gear shift feel wonderful but still the grind.
