4th Gear Grind - New Transmission?

Bought an 05' RX-8 with 16,300 miles on it. Apparently though it has a squeeky clutch pedal and 4th grear grind at high rpms. By high rpms, I mean above 6k. Upshift or downshift. I have an appointment with the Mazda dealer but do you think I need a new transmission. With this many miles on it...what the hell would a synchro be fucked on it already?

Annoying really...warranty should cover it though.

that is exactly what happens with my car. At 32k I had grinding at 6k and above. I brought it to the dealer who said they couldn't replicate it. At 47k miles it got worse. Grinding at 4k and above. Next week I get a new tranny

Same thing here. Only when I'm getting really hard on it. It even goes hard to go into 4th at normal driving opperation. I'm starting to wonder if this is a pattern with MT RX8's.

mysql101, what year was your RX8 if you don't mind me asking, because if it's 2005 like mine and Silvers, then we have a connection. Prehaps 2005 model RX8 MT transmissions have issues with the 4th gear synchros. If so, that would be really crappy but hey, there you go.

Hmmm

Thanks for the replies. Maybe we can get the all knowing Charles in here for a comment to see if this is a trend.

I mean...they do what they have to do to fix it. I'm just surprised that at such low mileage...the tranny is biting the dust.

Oh the life of a Sunlight Silver...damn...they had a brilliant blue too...

I have it but only at extremely high shifts to 4th (not necessarily quick shifts either, at any speed as long as rpms are high enough). Only reason I havent contested with dealer is that these shifts occur when you shift from third in the 90's. I think Ill try to replicate it today and see what happens...

i a thread i made i got the consensus that it was my syncro...

My 2004 3rd-to-4th gear change grinds as well at ANY RPM. And only 3rd-to-4th.

Dealer was "unable to reproduce" it so they blew me off. Going to try again when I bring it in for service though.

jowettw, from my background, I would recommend you bring it to them several times. This will build up a case that it's a real issue and they aren't fixing it. I brought it to my dealer once, then gave up when they said they couldn't replicate the issue. Because of this, I wouldn't have a case if I wanted to take legal action on the faulty parts.

Update: At the dealership.

I took it to the dealership this morning...had to make them give me a lonaer vehicle...they said if they didnt find anything I would have to pay for the loaner...I suggested they better find something then.

So...Transmission grind, clutch pedal, smell of burning oil. I'll update you.

They gave me a ******* mazda 5 to drive. Sigh...it has nav. though.

U're lucky to have a Mazda 5 with Nav.

I usually get **** like Edge and stuff.

The clutch pedal thing ... you have to be real lucky for them to replace it if its not *completely broken*.

Lets hope they dont just park ur car there for a day then return it back to you with a *we cant find any problems* kind of bullshit.

Update again

Well...they adjusted the clutch pedal bracket for me...now that feels ALOT better. I was hoping maybe this would alleviate the grind too but that isnt the case.

I took the car out with the service manager who was driving. We took a risk but he drove it around and got it to 7k in 3rd gear but it doesnt grind at that level. He told me to keep him updated on the issue and this is the first time he has heard of the clutch bracket...which I then reffered him to THIS site...which hopefully he finds valuable.

He did however say that the 04' RX-8 is a "completely different vehicle" than the 05's+ because of multiple replaced engines (over 15) and apex seals. Yikes...glad I got the 05. Too bad I got a Silver....AHHH.

We are rescheduling it to take it on the road for another run at the grind.
