I am curious about the people running 87 and 89 in their 8s. However I will never try it. I feel that sticker by the gas cap that says "premium fuel recommended" is enough for me to not try things. I can't believe the folks who are daring enough to try E85. Then they sell the car to some poor fella, and the car croaks soon after. Then the new owner tells every one how crappy the rotary engine is, and it gets the reputation rx8's are unreliable, only because that first idiot was too cheap to buy premium.

Anyone try Diesel in their 8 yet? Mazda recommends gasoline, but never really says NOT to use Diesel.

I feel nycgps is pretty darn smart when it comes to these engines. All of my posts that he's chimed in on he's given me the answers I needed and those answers were correct. That's just my personal experience.

E85 will not damage the engine internals. I don't know how this competely wrong line of thought was started.

People shouldn't run E85 unless they've tuned for it, and have appropriate fuel delivery rings and lines.

I've run 87 octane for 70K on my '04 with zero issues.

I've just started running 89 - two tanks of it so far, with no problems, and slightly (1 mpg maybe) better fuel economy. I'll probally put 87 in it when it cools down, as it's been 90+ here the past week or so.

I have used everything from 87-89-91-93 and never once noticed any difference in engine performance or idle quality from (5-95 degrees F), I have the stock engine no modifications. I did notice a little bit higher MPG with 87 and less money in my wallet with 93.

Until I start to notice problems I will continue to use 87, and I think our cars manual states that you can use a lower grade as long as knocking does not occur.

Also, I will only use large oil company brands Shell, Texaco, Sunoco, etc. I never use other discount stations. Call it unnecesary but I feel better using these brands.

I wasnt trying to say you guys are wrong for doing it, just saying I'm not going to run anything but premium. Maybe I should've said u guys are more of a man than I am for trying.

87 might or might NOT work on your car, it depends on several factors like :

Quality of Fuel (and the Gas station's tank)
Where you live (Above sea level or not, and if above, how much above)
Outside temperature & Humidity
Your engine's "working" condition, and Engine's nature.

I aint smart or anything. Im still learning, just like everyone else. Im trying pass down what I know to the others. I have a rule tho, and I guess most ppl know what it is

ahh, I should try some Diesel into my 8 ... lol !

emphasis is mine. What is wrong with the OEM ones if E85 won't damage anything?

I believe he means it won't damage the rotors or housings, but that it could possibly eat fuel seals/lines... I don't know enough about it to comment

Maybe I'm just a redneck, but when people say "it won't harm your engine" I include your fuel system as a part of the engine, seeing as it won't run without one.

Well form what ive heard 87 octane may make you get worse mpg. but because our engine is rotary and not cylinders im not sure if it applies BUT. i also have heard Only gas from shell and Bp are liek good so from shell or bp i dnt mind getn the low gas. but if i go anywhere else only if i MUST i put premium i've actually had one of myc ars shutdown stop workign from cheap gas and My rx8 i ONCE put cheap gas and my check engine light came on then i put the Vpower from shell and it went away. SO spend the extra couple bucks rather than the thousands in car repiars.

^+1 87 = more mpg, get it in the winter, and summer if ur car can handle it.

^ same here.... I hit 15.0 afr at 8,000 rpms and still didn't have a problem either during the early days of tuning
