9500 rpm?!

9500 rpm?!
A week or so ago I was coming home from work in my RX-8 (2009 GT manual). I dropped the car down to third gear to pass some traffic before the interchange (nothing more annoying than being in a fun car stuck behind lemmings on expressway ramps). In the middle of the pass I noticed my tachometer was showing about half-way between 9000 and 10000 RPM. Shocked and a bit panicked, I immediately shifted up to fourth gear.
I'm pretty sure I've banged into the rev limiter before on this car, so I'm pretty sure it's working most of the time. But this was the second instance where I thought I saw the gauge report well over 9000 RPM. The first time I was less certain that I really saw it, but this time, I'm 100% sure it was around 9500 RPM.
Now, did the car really somehow get to 9500 RPM, or did the gauge just act a bit funky on it's quick rise to high engine speeds?

Yeah 9500 is considered normal...anyone that drives...and I mean drives their car hits the 9500 or so rpm. I think mine dies off at about 9750 at the gauge...or at least when I was stock it did. But I think factory is like 9250

Thanks, all. I thought I had read the the cutoff was at 9000 or 9100 RPM.
By the way, I don't have anything done to the car yet, other than light Axis Circuit wheels. It's almost brand new. Sure didn't seem all that slow to me getting to 9500 RPM (indicated) in third gear!
