About checking oil every 500...

They say to check it every 500, and they say your better off not waiting for the light to come on. But what if you keep a case of oil in your trunk? Can you then wait for the light to come on, and immediately add some, or is that still too low?

i wait for the light...gives you a pretty good margin. i keep 2 qt's and a bottle of spot detailer in the compartment in the rear seat pass through, so if im on a trip, i just pull over and top it off right away.

Exactly when the light comes on, how many quarts down are you?

well, it's 1.8 from the full mark to the low mark. i'd guess the light is at 2 quarts from max. that's why i carry it with me, as so far the light has only come on during long highway trips, which i take alot of.

When your light comes on, you add a full two quarts?

I just check it every 1000 miles (easy to remember). Usually takes a little less than 1/2 qt at that time.

IMO - waiting for the light to come on is too late. Checking every 500 miles is a bit frequent, I check mine about every 1000-1500 and top up.

The oil remaining in the oilpan is subject to g-forces when you corner, etc. and it's possible when you're running that low that the oil could slosh away from the pump pick up and starve the engine for oil - that would be bad. Why take the risk when you can just check and top up every 1500 miles? Doing that also doesn't numb you to the oil light, since if it should come on for some other reason (like you sprung a leak in your oil cooler) you probably wouldnt worry about it until you got to your destination which may be too late.

Think that's exactly what the manual says to do.

For what it's worth the 2003 GMC Yukon owner's manual recommends checking the oil at every fillup, and that's unlikely to be unique to the industry for newer-model vehicles. So checking the oil as often as every other fillup is nothing special.

I have to go buy the oil this weekend. Driven it for 800 miles and most probably check it up at 1000 and I've already filled up gas 4 times.

I check mine every 1000 miles (makes it easy to remember).
But, I don't ussually top off until every 2K because that is when it needs a full quart.
