Air pump quit working

Air pump quit working
Well it quit working and i was wondering if there was anyone who knows how to test it to make sure its dead or to get it working again?
It has caused a code to trip the CEL and when its cold it sounds like I have an aftermarket intake then after a minute or so the sound goes away and sounds normal and will stay that way as long as the engine is warmed up.
What my main question is is do you really need the air pump? is it not working going to have an effect on the engine or worse the cat? I know its for emissions but we dont have emission checks here in KS. I found a used one for sale and if I need to have the pump I will purchase it.
Also, is it easy to remove? it looks pretty straight forward.
Ok guys thanks for any info you can give me.

All Auto Manufacture has something like that for their car. Its required by law.
It does not harm your car in any way, its just that it will take a bit longer to get the engine/cat to optimum operating temperature and a CEL.

i've read people saying it can lower the life of a cat. but if you dont have emissions testing then remove the cat and then remove the air pump. racing beat sells a blocking plate or you can fab your own .

yea it looks pretty straight forward....i just hope the used one i buy works...lol
I would just remove it and the cat but dont want to mess with the cat situation..so ill just replace the pump and be done with it.
Plus if i just remove the pump i dont want it to shorten the life of the cat.
thanks
