When you put your car in first gear at a stop does your car automatically rev up to 1500rpm, as well as in reverse? Because until a mechanic touched my car underneath the dash by the pedals mine did this but now it doesnt all the sudden. I just bought my 8 a week ago and the check engine light was on, i bought the car off the used lot of a major toyota dealership in SoCal so they dont know rotarys so they sent me to the local mechanic up the street from them that they are buddies with. The mecahnic fixed it and said my cable that runs to my clutch sensor was disconnected so he connected it and i left, a few hrs later it comes back on, i take it back again and this time the same mecachanic says the switch is just plain bad so he farts around under the pedals for about 10 minutes and when he emerges he tells me he replaced the switch and now it will be ok.
I am wondering if maybe this mechanic just disconnected something small to make the check engine light stay off and now that is why it wont rev up. It worked until he touched it so it really has me suspicous. It was a very crappy little shop attached to a 76 gas station...
Atleast my warranty is covering alllllll of this so its not costing me anything accept time and gas.

No my RX-8 does not automatically rev up to 1500rpms all by its self.
Is your check engine light still on? if so shoot over to a autozone or checker and have them read the code. Then seach the code on here to find out whats going on with your 8.
Clutch sensor?
Check this thread out *post 6 7 and 10. Post 16 shows what it should look like*. It show where it is located

Check to see if the little metal connectors are bent

it sounds like what the "little shop" did was to short the clutch pedal switch by the clutch pedal.
This will tell the PCM that "Ok, the clutch pedal is down, go back to idle state cuz gear is about to kick in"
It does not solve the problem (obviously)
crawl down to your clutch pedal and check. if that guy just "cut and connect" some wires around the clutch pedal switch (There is 2, with different purpose), go back there and yell at him.
the "idle bouncing back and forth" is either your "Transmission Neutral position switch is not working", or outside weather is too cold and the switch frozen up.
For the record, the switch is located on the side on the transmission.

Well after the guy touched the car it stopped doing the bouncing of rpms crap it was doing b4. I mean if its not supposed to bounce up and down then maybe he really did replace the swtich down their and now everything is working properly. Because he told me he replaced the switch so now the check engine light should stay off, i only started questioning what he did when i thought all rx8's had the bouncing rpms in first gear, but if you guys say that doesnt happen in yours then i guess he really replaced the switch and actually fixed it.
If you feel im wrong and something is still wrong then by all means let me know
Thank you very much for your help everyone

Ok, there are two switches on the clutch pedal, one to start the car and the other one is for the PCM. The PCM switch is very flimsy and the plastic button can break pretty easily. I believe the PCM one is the top switch.
Here's something cool, disconnect the connector to the bottom switch, grab a wire, strip both ends, and put it into the connector, your car will start up without having to press on the clutch pedal.

And one more thing, I have broken my switch (been replaced) when I was adjusting my clutch pedal, like I said before, the plastic button on the switch is very easy to break, all I applied was about 1 lbs of pressure on it from the side and it snapped. That's probably what happened to yours.
Lets say you are trying to hit that pedal adjustment bolt all the way on top which is right above the PCM switch, you turn your crescent wrench and then "POP", there goes your switch. (BTW, this is how I broke mine)

MULTI POST!!!!
One more thing, I'd do a visual inspection. Go into your foot well and look at the clutch pedal. You'll see 2 switches, look at the top one. Is there anything like a push rod sticking out? Are the wires intact? Is the connector properly seated? I have a huge hunch that the push rod is broken.

Okay i just looked at the 2 switches, one, the switches r next to each other so im not sure which one you are referring to as the top one but the one on the right has tape wrapped around it, im not sure if that was always their or not. but theirs nothing sticking out of them or anything like that.
