Alternative to the 400 dollar starter upgrade.
I like many live on a budget so when my 8 needed a new starter the thought of paying Mazmart almost 400 bucks for a starter really stuck in my craw.
This is the starter we all want and need. N3Z1-18-400
We have a dedicated parts store at work and I had the manager do some digging for me. The N3Z1 number crosses to a Bosch BSH# SR4238X
The Bosch SR4238X is a 2KW starter for a manual transmission RX8. It is a re-manufactured starter.
A thought about re-manufactured stuff. Some is good. Some is bad. But that's nothing different from new parts either. Plus Bosch has an excellent reputation so I decided to take the chance and ordered this starter. My cost was less than 100 bucks. Average cost is going to be around 150 for walk in customers.
The new starter is much beefier than the factory starter and bolted right up.
WOW! from long drawn out embarrassing starts to "zing vroom!".
For me money well spent.
Hopefully somebody will find this useful as well.

Rockauto lists that starter for $360.00 and a $111.00 core. ACdelco has a 2KW starter as well that is cheaper than the Bosch.

Autozone Duralast Starter
I just installed the 1.4kw starter from Autozone in my '04. I saw that they had a 2kw for later models, but didn't have any in stock. Plus I wasn't sure if the 2kw would fit. So I decided to risk it with the 1.4. Well, it works great. I don't know much about the technical aspects of starters, but I did notice that it was around 20% bigger than the stock unit. Not only that, but it sounded very different. It has kind of a high frequency electric whine to it, yet is quieter than stock. The motor seems to be spinning significantly faster while cranking, though I can only compare it to my 77k mile stock unit. Overall, I'm very happy with how it performs. And to top it off, it has a lifetime warranty. All for just over $100 after returning the core.

iirc the upgraded one is longer than the old version. the mazda part # is different too. if your returning a core (the old one) make sure the new one is longer
