It is the original pure synthetic oil manufaturer. It's great stuff. They make oils, lubes and anything related like filters, dual filter systems, etc.... From autos to industrial lubes. All pure synthetic. In 30 years they have never had a oil related warranty claim against them. You have to purchase directly from their website or a Amsoil dealer. It's not sold in stores. They ship worldwide. Quarts to Drums and any and all weights

Now......per your manual........NOT RECOMMEND TO RUN SYNTETIC IN YOUR 8....or any other rotary for that matter. It's great oil as it doesn't break down as dino oil can, but it has different burn off than dino oil does. Rotaries require that burn off......

Show me! Or just tell me the page number, so I can look it up in my own manual - because I've tried, and I just can't find the "not recommended to run synthetic" anywhere in my RX-8 manual!

just kidding, because it's not there. Nowhere in the RX-8 owners manual does it mention synthetic oil - all it states is that it requires 5W20, API SL spec. If your synthetic oil of choice meets API SL, 5W20, then it complies with all warranty requirements for RX-8 oil in North America (outside North America, Mazda specifies 5W30). For older rotaries, Mazda did specify no synthetic. Not for the RX-8. There was a separate Drivers Guide that mentioned not using synthetic, but in different e-mails to Mazda people have got different stories - basically, Mazda said they were testing so hold off, then they said it's OK, then the lawyers made them say to hold off again, etc...!

There's been plenty of RX-8 and synthetic oil threads - the burn-off reason has been disputed as well. (Synthetics burn just fine, usually more cleanly than less pure mineral oils that contain waxes and ash).

Oh, re: not sold in stores - in Canada, Amsoil is on the shelves of the Canadian Tire stores, a huge chain of hardware stores!

Regards,
Gordon

I was at the Mazda Rev-it-up this past weekend (i'll wite about it more later), and in the section of the event where anyone that comes can test drive Mazda cars, I saw a guy putting oil in two RX-8s (one auto, one stick). This was before the even was opened. I walked up to see what brand oil he was putting in and it was MOBIL-1. He asked me to leave, but I said I just wanted to know why he was using Mobil-1, and he replied - "Look, I just put in what they give me".

I just thought it was interesting that he was using it in both RX-8s. Oh, and one other thing I noticed, He checked the oil on 'cold' engines, that is they were not warmed up.

I found both quite interesting.

forgot......

additionally, I need to correct myself. There are Dealer owned and run Amsoil storefronts in the US you can buy this stuff (we don't have one here in our city), but I have never run across any sites listed for retail chain carrying the stuff.....if there is, it's not on their website.

okay folks.....per Gordon's request.....this is a scan of the "Drivers Guide" that was attached to the inside of my manual with that funcy snot glue. The print date is Jan 04 print version 6.

Please note the last paragraph under the "Fill it up, and check the oil too" section. First line......

"Add only non-synthetic 5w-20 engine oil with SL or ILSAC on the container label."

That's not to say you absolutely can't use sythentic, I'm just stating what it has printed.....if someone out there is running pure sythetic, please keep us updated on consumption, any issues, etc.

I would love to run Amsoil in this car, I have used it for years in my other autos and their filters as well.

a) I never got the above posted card

b) FYI - most AMSOIL products do not meet the API standards because they contain too much magnesium or phosphorus (can't remember which... its their friction additive) which can lead to failed O2 sensors and fouling of catalytic converters

I think that guide was written very early on. Notice the part that says "Spare Tire? No Way". Somewhere along the line that became "Way".

Edit: -- oops, disregard. It does mention the optional spare at the end...
