This is how the pro's do it. It's an option to the Maguires kit. I've never used that so I can't compare, though I've tried using drills as grinders and with wire wheels and stuff and that's somewhere between irritating and ineffective, so I can imagine. And, if you're like me, you never pass up an opportunity to buy a new tool.
First, wet sand them with 1000 grit sandpaper. I sand it until the water runoff from the sanding is clear. That way I know I got all the discolored plastic. This takes about 10 minutes.
Then I tape it off and I hit with the high speed wheel using 3M Finesse-it.
Voila! Done in 15 minutes.
You can buy high speed wheels from Harbor Freight for $30. This one is an antique snapon but I also have one from HF and they both work great.
Finesse-it comes from the auto body supply store. The big bottle is $60 but you can use it for anything. It rubs out minor scratches and all kinds of stuff. Like those little scratches you get behind the door handle.
The wool brush came from there as well. I also have some foam one's that work pretty well, but this is what was chucked up to the tool this morning so that's what I used. The wool gets all over your clothes when you use it, though.
Oh and sorry about the crape myrtle leaves all over the car. It sorta makes the whole scene look more Japanese, though, don't you think?
Hope this helps.
