Another tranny noise thread...
Loud whine noticed when in a closed parking deck when clutch is depressed and tranny in gear while coasting. Loudest in 1st gear. Noticeable in 2nd gear. To duplicate: stop, put in 1st, engage and get up to around 15mph, press clutch down but leave in 1st gear and coast (listen for whine).
I'm pretty sure this is normal, right? Kinda freaked out by it...

ill have to drive the car and listen for it, off the top of my head i dont recall hearing it but it sounds normal.
when you say loud whine, do you mean loud like you can hear it, or LOUD like a honda backing up (straight cut gears)

Well, I think it's decently loud. I know the whine happens in my rx7s but it is more pronounced in the 8. You probably can't hear it well in open spaces--just in closed spaces. I think it's just due to the gear spinning very fast (I hope).

Probably the clutch throwout bearing. It's normal for it to make some noise, up to a point. Since you spend almost all your time *not* holding down the clutch, it's not a big issue.
That being said, the noise shouldn't be shrieking or anything. The original Miatas had problems with overly-noisy clutch throwout bearings which were solved by use of a better high-temperature grease, iirc...
