Anyone have problems after engine recall?

I am looking to purchase a 2006 RX-8 6 Speed with 30K Miles. I have read about the problems with engine failure in 2004, 2005, and some 2006 Cars. I had the dealer look up to see if the recall was performed on this car I am looking at. It had the PCM reprogramed under recall for oil metering and timing.
My question is, has anyone still experienced engine failure after these problems were corrected under recall? And I mean engine failure during normal driving of the car.
I want the car to take to nasa HPDE events. I currently have a 1987 Corvette, and it just requires too much upkeep because of how old it is. The RX-8 just seems like a more practical choice for me, and I have always wanted a rotory engine!
I just dont want any unexpected engine failure problems.

Well being that 2012 is around the corner and since your not buying a new one I would se be prepared at any moment to have an engine failure. But then again if you were a smart car driver you would be prepared in ANY vehicle at ANY time for something to go wrong. Buy an 06 so you have a couple extra years on your engine warranty. Just be ready for something to happen because some people seem to blow engines faster than others. My engine is closing in on 70,000 miles on it, with original coils, plugs, wires, and clutch in it. So give it take what you read on here, but just know there is no consistancy.

Yeah I'm looking at a 2006 and that extended warranty makes me feel a little safer. Trust me, I am prepared for anything to go wrong with a vehicle... I have had my fair share of major issues on and off the track. I guess I was just trying to guage a feel for how reliable these cars are. I have always liked the looks and the balance of them, and thik rotory is cool. Just want it to be worth my time. Seeing there is a big community for them shows they must be worth it!
Out of curiosity, how expencive is an engine rebuild on one of these compared to like an LS engine?
