Automatic transmission fluid change

My wife's 2004 RX-8 has 29,000 miles on it and I am thinking about changing the transmission oil. I cannot find a post on it with the search. What fluid does it use and how much will it take? Does it have a filter. Thanks for your help

I recommend you have the transmission flushed.

Yes, as ED suggested, but dont take it to jiffy lube, it's easy enough to do yourself.

to flush I assume that you connect to a transmission line going to the radiator and start the car letting the engine flush the system.

Randy

You could use this, and its universal.

Randy, this is what you need.
ATF M-III or equivalent (e.g. DexronII)
Capacity (approx. quantity)
8.7 L {9.2 US qt, 7.7 lmp qt}

How do you know it is compatible with Mazda / Aisin spec ATF? Automatic transmissions are calibrated for specific fluids with certain viscosity and friction modifier characterisitcs, and this can vary by manufacturer and model application.

Also, the Mazda fluid at the dealer is FAR less expensive. This is ridiculous.

You won't get 9.2 qt out with a simple drain. It would require a flushing machine or multiple drains, in which cases you would need more than 9.2 quarts to complete the flush/change.
