Battery/Start Upgrade, any recommendations?

Hey guys,

Im looking to upgrade my starter and battery to prepare for the cold winter. I can feel my car starting to get weaker on ignition, and I have never changed my battery (69k).. I also have the original starter on the 04 model, so I'm looking to upgrade that while I'm at it.

Which starter to you guys recommend? I know there are a few out there..

Which battery should I go with? Im looking something with hi amp's because I have a car computer running that sucks alot of power, and I use often when the engine isnt running..

Thanks!

Didn't know BHR and MazSport made starters

Anyway... You can try the buy/sell section of this forum and hope to get a deal on a used one.
Or buy it new from vendors like MazMart:

For batteries, I've been a fan of Optima (you would benefit from the yellow top)

As much CCA as you can find.

750 Cold Cranking will be fine for the cold winter.

Whats the difference between the red top and the yellow top?

EDIT:

Did some research.. Looks like im gonna get the red top for the starter, and then a yellow top + Isolater for the car computer.. Pricey but worth it IMO..

Thanks!

The uprated starter is well advised.

Don't forget coils, 'plugs and cables. And verify your alternator belt tension and output (~14v) as well. They're all related to starting/running goodness.

You may want to consider the BHR ignition system (includes GMC Yukon coils and MSD cables). They can also get you a good deal on Iridium 'plugs.

I now also advocate the Diehard Platinum P-5 Group 35 over Redtop.

The Redtop is a bit heavier than the OEM Interstate as well. It's the price you pay for more rugged and higher sub-component quality construction.

I'd like opinions on starter brands too; I have the '04 stock starter now. I've swapped my battery for a reverse post yellow top, and so far it's been working fine. The CCA is less than the red top, but I like the yellow in case I need to deep cycle to de-flood.

^ you definitely want the uprated Mazda-branded starter. A good battery is great, but if the starter-engaged flywheel isn't turning fast enough ....
A couple vendors here still have them., including I believe Finishlineperformance.com (drop Tommy a note).
