brake pad replacement: do i need to use the stock shims with hawk pads?
I am replacing pads.
Stock pads do not have shim on pad. the hawk have a shim built in to back of pad. does this mean i should not use the shim that was on them stock?

It wont hurt to try. If it has shims built in, then most likely you wont need to use factory shims. I have never used Hawk pads on my RX-8, but I have RB ET500 pads. My ET500 pads didnt come with shims, and I used factory shims at first. Major squeaking. I took off the factory shims and that improved brake feel and canceled out the shim squeal.

I was wondering this myself when I did the install. HAWK pads actually have a bump on the pads that prevent you from using the OEM shims anyway. I have about 12K on my hawk HPS pads with hawk shims, never squealed once.

Brakes are one of the most important functions on a vehicle. The stock or aftermarket shims should be added for safety precautions. If it's working for you without the shims, then it's alright, only if your brakes are working properly.
