I don't mean to beat a dead horse but does anyone know if Mazda puts special "Break-in" oil in the Rx-8? I know for a fact some other automakers do. By doing so they definately do not want you to change the oil at 1000 miles, but let it go to the first recommended change. If not I plan to change at 1k.

My dealer's rep said there was no special oil in the engine for breakin. The oil has a green color that could be a dye or a fancy base stock like Duckhams used for their turbo oils in the 80's. There is a theory that oil filters get more efficient with miles so I don't change them less than 3000 miles. Factory built engines are much cleaner inside than shop rebuilds - another reasion to not worry about leaving in the initial oil fill :D

My dealer told me they DO have break-in oil, they (only) want the first oil change to be at the dealers, not less than 4000 kilometres, not more than 5000. Said they take a little sample of the oil and send it to Mazda Canada. Then I could take it anywhere else for my changes.
The thing that rings true in this is that it was practically the only thing he DID know, he was mostly clueless about rotaries in general, and the '8' in particular! He never bullshot me about anything else, so I tend to listen to what he does know.
