cant shift into 5th and 6th gears HELP!
hey all i searched and couldnt find any threads like this one:
but anyways i was leaving work one morning and went on the highway, and got up to forth gear and then went to 5th and it ended up reving like i was in 3rd, i tried it 2 times then went into 4th and tried again, same thing happened, then i tried 6th and ended up in 4th gear and played around with it only to find out i had no 5th or 6th gear, confused i was! and while i have it in 3rd and 4th gear there is play...as if there is no wall between 3rd/5th and 4th/6th like it usually would be, and now the fastest i am able to go is 55 in 4th otherwise anymore than that and ill be reving too high, anyone might know what it could be, when i got it looked at the mechanic took the shifter out to check the pins and all that stuff and those are fine so he said he has to take the tranny apart to see whats broken or whatev, any suggestions would help! THANKS
(but i am able to go into reverse!) and in neutral there is alot of play on the right side and some resistance on the left if this make any sense

thank for the answer at least someone did haha jk, but i havent shifted anything different, 04 76k but they had just taken the tranny out and were workin on it fri-sat, i called sat to find out what the update was, they said they took the tranny apart...couldnt find out what was the matter except for a bolt inside the shift housing? or whatever he had said was broke, so they replaced it with a new bolt, and should have the tranny back in by monday, they are going to test drive it, if it works then problem solved im crossing my fingers!

i had a problem shifting into 6th one time. it was like the 6th gear syncro was blocking me from going in. kinda like hitting a brick wall. after driving it for about a half hour i finally got it to go in and neverhad a problem since. I do have the afe sort shifter that may have been the problem. hopefully yours is a easy fix

trouble with 6th at higher RPMs as well
have a '09 rx8 r3 with about 3K miles on it and about 1000 miles ago noticed that sometimes i can't shift into 6th gear when over 4000rpm. i thought it was just me at first and kept telling myself i was somehow not putting the clutch all the way in (it was really bad when coasting down a hill on the highway and then when trying to slot it into sixth, it would be like i barely touched the clutch and gear started banging against the stick; mind you, this wasn't when i let the clutch out, this was while my left foot was completely to the floor and was just trying to put it into the slot).
i have an appt for this friday so i'll fill you guys in on what they say. i'm worried they're gonna say they didn't find anything and as you guys know, mazda warrantees don't cover a rental while your car's in the shop so this could get annoying, fast.

they first went through the shift tower thought maybe one of the rods snapped or w/e, they said nope it wasnt in there(i sat right next to him while he took it apart)i have the same grinding issues but in 3rd and 4th idk why?? and as far as not being able to put it in 6th? mine had the same problem too but i wonder if it was the bolt issue...IM GETTING MY CAR BACK TODAY! finally!!!! im excited, all it was, was a broken bolt ill let you know final details as to where when i get the bill,

UPDATE!!!!!:
finally after 6-7 days and $327.53 later i got my car back.....lol and it shifts like its brand new :O amazing! it goes into each gear with ease and doesnt grind as much anymore and going into 6th and reverse work so smoothly and it short shifts better than before too!!! so what was wrong with it? a broken bolt (bolt was snapped in half, they showed me) the location of the bolt was in the shift housing? on the opposite end of the shift boot area, it was in the tranny...so they had to take the tranny all apart to find it
$280 in labor.........
finally after 6-7 days and $327.53 later i got my car back.....lol and it shifts like its brand new :O amazing! it goes into each gear with ease and doesnt grind as much anymore and going into 6th and reverse work so smoothly and it short shifts better than before too!!! so what was wrong with it? a broken bolt (bolt was snapped in half, they showed me) the location of the bolt was in the shift housing? on the opposite end of the shift boot area, it was in the tranny...so they had to take the tranny all apart to find it

this is what was happening with my 6th gear like a bunch of times, i wonder if it is a similar issue, now after having been fixed there are no issues with 6th gear, sometimes i would strain my shoulder trying to put in 6th (im skinny and have no shoulder muscle haha, but i am a girl so its fine)

In case anyone wants to know, Mazda NA told my dealer to install new "upgraded" synchros for 5th and 6th gear. Hopefully they'll have it done by this evening so I can get on the gas out of turns like God intended cars to do. (been driving my parents' mazda tribute around and I die a little inside every time i have to baby it around a corner)

My girlfriend has a 2004 RX8 and mentioned the issue about not being able to shift into 5th or 6th gear a few weeks ago. She on,y drives on the freeway once or twice a week so I forgot about it. A week later she mentioned it again, I called a friend who races for Mazda and he was out of town but said he would check it out when he got back. Well Thanksgiving came up and again I forgot about it but on Saturday she said it was shifting fine somimthought the issue worked it self out, not so lucky today (Sunday) again it will not go into either high gear. I have read the posts here I can find and it seems like a known issue with the bolt breaking. My question, is anyone aware of a campaign or service notice on this problem? I would probably not be bringing this to a dealer unless there is a campaign due to the high costs versus a local shop. My GF is so upset with this at this point she just wants to sell the car at this point.
Anyone in Northern CA looking for a 2004 RX-8 with 65k miles, red in color with two tone leather seats I may have one for you! I don't know the different model options and such or I would post that also. Oh and the motor was replaced about 18 months ago for free by Mazda so the engine on,y has like 15k on it.

Not trying to make a new thread since this is my exact issue. I'm locked out of 5th and 6th gear but it will go in to reverse. All I did was take my short shifter out to double check I installed it correct and now I'm having this problem after reinstalling my shifter.
Any idea what bolt could be causing this? I'd like to fix it myself, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for.
