Catalytic Converter Operating Temperature / Clogged ?

I have a strong feeling my cat is clogged, i was just wondering what kind of temps you guys are getting on the cat during 45 mph cruise?

Is high cat temp a sign of a clogged cat?

Mine is always between 1600f - 1750f which seems really high, and this is in ambient temperature of -4f

got the car 2 months ago and never driven any other rx8 before, so I dont know what it should feel like when working correctly, it feels down on power especially up high in the rpms.

These temps cooking my seals? I thought 1500f seemed more realistic,

1750f in freezing cold temperatures just seems quite a bit off to me, I need to take care of this before it kills my rotary!

Also, I just got new coils, wires, and plugs which helped a lot after the install so for sure my old coils were close to dead which could have killed my cat.

definitely shouldn't be that high. I barely break 1700 doing a strong redline pull on the highway.

i see, what kind of weather do you get those temperatures?

that does it, if i cant find a used midpipe for a decent price soon, I think im going to hollow my cat out, i really didn't want to have to do that but its better then my engine dying, and I dont have to do a e-test for 3 years, and the cat is most likely clogged so its probably no good anyways

I use a ScanGauge II and what I think is the code for the O2 sensor near the cat and it reads up to 900 or so, the low 800s just cruising on the highway.

I'm wondering how you guys are reading your Cat temp.

I have a 2010 GT with about 30,000 miles.

My AP was seeing ~900s under normal driving (MM catless tune), and 1,500 or so when romping on it.

It's provided via OBD-II. I was able to read in in realtime via the Torque app for Android and a Bluetooth OBD-II adapter.

I was up around 1650, after tune up, 1500 to 1550. Remove gas from the mix, the cat cools down. It burns gas. If you burn it in the engine, life is good.

The Renesis tech manual for the Star Spec series suggested that if everything else about the engine remains a constant (spark, fuel, tune, etc...) then climbing EGTs will indicate failing seals. I would guess that this is because some of that gas isn't being burned in the engine any more

Mine reads high too. Cruising at 70 - 75 mine reads 1650 - 1700. The sensor is reading Bank 1 Sensor 1, and I was told that was not for the actual cat. Sensor 2 is actually the cat sensor. IDK how true that is.

thats how it should be! Those are some damn nice temps. I hope to get the midpipe and MM tune, runs leaner, so better mpg and more power and lower exhaust temps, win win win!

so does the midpipe lower the exhaust temps more then the leaner MM tune?

So the Cobb AP can read the Exhaust Temps/Cat temps?

Please tell me where this is located in the AP unit.

Thanks,

Hmm...

It might have been the Torque app through the bluetooth dongle. I dont' have my AP any more, so it's just memory, but scanning down the list of available live items from my memory, I don't remember seeing it.

Sorry, I guess that was a wrong recollection about which device I had plugged in at the time.
